Food Scene

A great locals only place with excellent food and great service. A great place for dinner with only a few tables available. Make sure you try the oja santa dishes and the bone marrow. Arrive early to secure a table (no reservations taken). Make sure you go to the bar right next to Bosoforo which has one of the best selections of Mezcal in Mexico City while you wait for a table or for a nightcap .

El Cardenal is a staple of our area. It is a high-end restaurant inside the Hilton. Do not let that dissuade you. El Cardenal serves great breakfast, lunch and dinner. Reservations highly recommended. Be sure you try their world famous hot chocolate AND the NATA if you are not lactose intolerant.

The "house of tiles" is a colonial building which is spectacularly adorned with tiles inside and out. Stop by for a cup of coffee in Sanborn's (a chain) and enjoy the space. The food there is not too good but it is a good place for a cup of coffee and a slice of pie.

Inside the Gran Hotel de la Ciudad de Mexico you will find a great restaurant. The building itself is spectacular, the food is great, the service is up to snuff and the terrace has a spectacular view of Zocalo square. A great place for lunch

The chocolate and the "conchas rellenas de nata" are to die for. The ambiance is elegant but it does get busy so call before you go or face a long wait.

So check it out, one day in Mexico City a long time ago.....or to be more specific during the Mexican revolution....there were a bunch of rowdy Mexicans drinking at La Opera (and it kind of was a work night....like they needed to fight the next day). Mexican revolutionary (and America's most wanted) Pancho Villa was around the area and after a couple of warnings to "keep it down" had failed to placate their drunken behavior, he rode into the bar on horseback and with gun in hand. A single shot was fired from his gun and fortunately for everyone in the bar and for us today, it found its way into the ceiling of La Opera. The hole remains and can be seen if you go and have their good food.

El Italianito es a hole in the wall restaurant with very good Italian food. The pasta is always aldente and the arribata red sauce they serve is spicy and good. Don't go for the ambiance. Go for the good inexpensive food.

Drinks & Nightlife

Salon Tenampa is a must visit bar. Located in Plaza Garibaldi (world capital of Mariachis), the bar has seen huge Mariachi music stars (charros) perform in it throughout the years. While there, enjoy the tequila or cold beer with some "chilaquiles con costilla" and have the mariachi sing table side (for a fee). Make sure you negotiate the cost of the mariachi before they start singing. They usually charge by the song (about 5 to 10 dollars per song or 100 to 200 pesos per song). Need suggestions for songs? Here are a few to get your Mexican on!: -El Mariachi Loco / Mexico Lindo y Querido / La Bikina / El Rey / Serenata Huasteca

A great place to have a cold beer or a straight shot in an original bonafide Mexican bar. Stop by after a long walk and get your second wind.
