Walk this famous road below the Acropolis hill - This magnificent pedestrian street is the way St. Paul walked from the Agora to the Areos Pagos...
In 51 AD, St. Paul the Apostle visited Athens, the cradle of Philosophy, Science and the Arts, and the proud owner of Parthenon. He arrived by boat at Faliro, the then harbor of the greater Athens area, and he walked to the city where he found an altar bearing the inscription “to the unknown God”. As he waited for his students Silas and Timothy, to arrive from the Greek province of Macedonia, he walked across the ancient Agora and the Acropolis, visited the Agora and discussed with philosophers. His destination was Areos Pagos where he preached the Unknown God to the Athenians and instituted Christianity in Athens.

The Pnyx (/nɪks, pəˈnɪks/; Ancient Greek: Πνύξ; Modern Greek: Πνύκα, Pnyka) is a hill in central Athens, the capital of Greece. Beginning as early as 507 BC, the Athenians gathered on the Pnyx to host their popular assemblies, thus making the hill one of the earliest and most important sites in the creation of democracy. At this site all the great political struggles of Athens of the "Golden Age" were fought out. Pericles, Aristides and Alcibiades spoke here, within sight of the Parthenon, temple of Athena. Here Demosthenes delivered his vilifications of Philip of Macedon, the famous Philippics.

In pre-classical times (before the 5th century BC), the Areopagus was the council of elders of the city, similar to the Roman Senate. The Areopagus (/ˌæriˈɒpəɡəs/) is a prominent rock outcropping located northwest of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. Its English name is the composite form of the Greek name Areios Pagos, translated "Ares Rock" (Ancient Greek: Ἄρειος Πάγος). In classical times, it functioned as the court for trying deliberate homicide. Ares was supposed to have been tried here by the gods for the murder of Poseidon's son.
The Areopagus, like most city-state institutions, continued to function in Roman times, and it was from this location, drawing from the potential significance of the Athenian altar to the Unknown God, that the Apostle Paul is said to have delivered the famous speech, "Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands." (Acts 17:24)

Wind your way along the coastal cliffs and beaches on the scenic drive to Cape Sounion, then grab your camera as you spot the magnificent remains of the Temple of Poseidon, perched high on the sea cliffs. You’ll have chance to get up close to the ancient monument, explore ruins dating back to 44 B.C and soak up the impressive coastal views.
Visit early in the morning before the tourist buses arrive, or head there for sunset to enact Byron’s lines from Don Juan :‘Place me on Sunium’s marbled steep / Where nothing save the waves and I / May hear our mutual murmurs sweep.’
Byron was so impressed by Sounion that he carved his name on one of the columns (sadly, many other not-so-famous travellers followed suit).

Roman Agora & Tower of the Winds
The entrance to the Roman Agora is through the well-preserved Gate of Athena Archegetis , flanked by four Doric columns. It was financed by Julius Caesar and erected sometime during the 1st century AD. The well-preserved, extraordinary Tower of the Winds was built in the 1st century BC by a Syrian astronomer named Andronicus. The octagonal monument of Pentelic marble is an ingenious construction that functioned as a sundial, weather vane, water clock and compass.
Each side of the tower represents a point of the compass, with a relief of a floating figure representing the wind associated with that particular point. Beneath each of the reliefs are faint sundial markings. The weather vane, which disappeared long ago, was a bronze Triton that revolved on top of the tower. The Turks allowed dervishes to use the tower.
