A massive, fortress-like structure in the heart of the Fairmount District, Eastern State gives a window into US history in a way no other site in Philly does. This first "modern" prison --- by 19th c. standards!--- closed its doors to inmates in 1971, but now offers tours that include history of incarceration, inmates' art, and Al Capone's cell. Around Halloween, a scary (not-for-little-kids!) haunted house tour is staffed by professional actors.
