Sightseeing

This is one of the oldest street art spots in the city. It’s an alleyway in the Mission that’s completely covered in murals. You get some crazy smells, but also beautiful artwork with flowers hanging over from the adjacent backyards. This is a historic San Francisco spot, and a lot of the murals have a political focus to them. When you’ve taken in the whole length of the alley, walk around the corner to Sycamore St. and Valencia, where the street art continues.

This area is mostly parking lots, so you can walk around and take in the art without having to worry about traffic. I have a large mural on the back of the Plumbers’ Union Building, and there are other murals circling the parking lots. You’ll definitely feel like you’ve found something special when you get here. City Dance Studios is right there. Walk by—sometimes they’ll be having a practice session outside.

At the intersection of Haight and Masonic, you’ll see some psychedelic, colorful art. Head west on Haight, towards Golden Gate Park, checking out the funky art on pretty much every corner. This area has so much style and history, and you’ll see it in the murals, stickers, and sculptures people have created. Heading east instead of west will take you into the Lower Haight, another neighborhood where there’s no shortage of great art on the streets.

The Mission District is a real hotbed for art and food culture. On this particular corner, opposite Tartine Bakery, I created a nice, colorful mural in the shape of a circle as my personal thank you to the Mission. Take a look at the Women’s Building, on the opposite side of 18th Street at Lapidge St., which is totally covered in murals, too.

This is another cool neighborhood street with a lot of tucked-away art. On the Mission Street side of the buildings it’s busy and loud, but then you turn down Osage and find peace and quiet. These two blocks are in the middle of everything in the Mission, yet still hidden. Here you’ll see traditional graffiti murals by local guys. Nearby, at 2831 Mission St., is one of my favorite galleries: Ratio3. It’s in an all-black building with minimal signage, and when you walk in, you’ll find a Chelsea-style gallery that’s always showing work by contemporary artists.

I like this spot because of the juxtaposition it presents. It’s a back alley in the Financial District where workers go to take their smoke breaks, and ever since I added a colorful mural here, they have something to look at, too. Street art in this area isn’t very common—my mural is the only one on the streets in FiDi. If you love architecture and exploration, the Embarcadero Center, half a block north, has these aboveground connecting walkways that I love. They give you an interesting view of surrounding buildings and the streets below.

Parks & Nature

The north end of the beach is fronted by a low curving wall that’s an always-changing display of street art. Further south at Lincoln Way, there’s another one worth checking out. Just bring an extra layer—no matter what the weather is like in the rest of the city, out here you might walk into a fog bank so thick you can't see the water. At the north end of the beach near the Cliff House restaurant, take a look inside the Camera Obscura—a rare device that uses sunlight to project an image of the outside surroundings onto a surface inside. It’s based on a 15th century design by Leonardo da Vinci.

Getting Around

Barry McGee—a local favorite and big deal in the street art world—has designed many murals on this garage in partnership with SFMOMA. You can find a variety of murals around the whole building. His work uses traditional geometric patterns that are uncommon in contemporary murals. A team of artists painted the big murals for him, but he hand-painted some smaller pieces himself. Start on the top floor of the lot and walk down—you’ll find small hand-painted works hiding in the corners, mostly near the elevators.
