The Henry Vilas Zoo is one of the best free community zoos. If you are more in the mood to watch wildlife in their native habitat take a stroll through the nearby UW Arboretum or watch birds (and sometimes fish) on Lake Wingra. From ice out to when it warms up in May, Wisconsin's state fish, the muskellunge, are running up Wingra Creek and do their best to try and jump the dam into Lake Wingra. No fishing allowed! Still dozens of 3 to 4 foot long fish are fun to watch.
