Maybe as a Hacker you aren't in San Francisco to do any sightseeing, but it is good to stretch the legs and get the blood flowing. The Embarcadero is a 10 minute walk, either on the streets or above the traffic via the Embarcadero Shopping Complex. There are many shops in the Ferry Terminal, and a really killer burger joint, too.

On Saturdays they have a large farmer's market you can enjoy. Just hop on the JR to the Bart station and Bart to Embarcadero.

The Embarcadero is the first place you can visit when you arrive at the piers in San Francisco. Shopping, sight seeing, food and everything else.
