Originally Fukugi played a role as the windbreak forest which protected a private house of Okinawa from a typhoon. By war or repeated development, the figure is going to disappear year by year.

About 1km north of the aquarium is the quaintly preserved village of Bise, a leafy community of traditional Okinawan houses along a beach. An atmospheric lane lined with old garcinia tree is perfect for strolling.
