Great for bush walks and camping. The Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park stretches for 70 kilometres from the Karangahake Gorge near Waihi to the Mamaku Plateau near Rotorua. It forms a natural barrier between the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions. In ancient times, the Kaimai Mamaku Range was a Noah's Ark for plants, riding high above seas of ice and oceans of water. In more recent times, Maori settlers formed tracks through the range, hunted in its subtropical forest and used its plants for food and medicine.

One of the best surfing beaches in New Zealand ... `come on in the water is fine', or if you would just like to lie on the beach and soak up the sun that's also fine.
The other option for swimming are the Mount Maunganui Hot Pools ... a unique hot water experience that reputedly have wonderful therapeutic characteristics.
There are also a great selection of cafes and restaurants on Marine Parade opposite the surf Lifesaving Club.
For a great value-for-money meal (smorgsborg) is Kwang Chow Chinese Restaurant on Mt Maunganui Road.
