Avoid the traffic, Uber from the airport and walk 500m up the road to rent a car on the days you might wish to use it.

If you are feeling adventurous, you can walk 2km during peak times to the Lakeside Station and take the local Metrorail train either to Cape Town, or south to Simonstown (more scenic ride along the ocean). It's quite affordable, approx R15 to Cape Town, takes about 40 mins, and you get to see the scenery from each of the stops along the way. Keep your valuables (cellphone, wallet, cameras) safe, muggings have been known to happen occasionally. Best and safest time to travel is during the day/peak times when it is busy.
