Parks & Nature

Sefton Park is one of the city’s crown jewels when it comes to beauty. With it’s lake at one end and a field often filled with festivals at the other it’s a must-go for any city visitor. And, it’s pretty much right on your temporary doorstep. You’ll see plenty of dogs being walked and even toy boats being sailed in the lake. So get yourself down their grab yourself a hot chocolate or an ice cream from the cafe (depending on the weather) and you’re guaranteed a good time. Especially at sunset.

Crown Street Park is the closest park to you right now. It’s kept pretty nice, there are often people walking dogs, there’s lots of fitness equipment you can use, and it’s pretty much your main route into town.

This park is better know as The Mystery. And the reason the Mystery is called the Mystery is in itself a mystery. I’ve always wondered why it was called this, but this is all anyone knows it as. Turns out it’s actually called Wavertree Playground which I was totally unaware of until I Googled it! It’s basically a huge open green space. Take a picnic. People often play cricket. There’s also an athletics centre, tennis courts, astroturf pitches, and an aquatics centre with a 50m pool.

Greenbank is the park I went to most as a kid. There a big like running right through where we always used to feed the ducks, a big grass bank to play/lay on. There’s always fishermen lined up along the edge of the lake and kids playing in the play park. In fact, if you watch Hollyoaks - this is the park they film in when they take their kids to the park in the show, so you might recognise it. Because Hollyoaks is filmed just up the road. Little known local nugget for you there.

Otterspool Park & Promenade is a must for kite-flyers. Pretty much every weekend you can catch people out by the waterfront flying their kites - and it’s great thing to watch. Peaceful. And as I mentioned and you can see form the photo - it’s right on the waterfront! You can see across to Wirral, and even the Welsh mountains in the distance. If you head to the path along the riverfront and walk to your right, you can actually walk all the way to the city centre. You’ll pass Festival Gardens, the Britannia (which does a great Sunday Roast), the Echo Arena, and eventually get to the Royal Liver Buildings! I strongly recommend the stroll.

Just a little ways down from Otterspool you’ll find Festival Gardens. This amazing space was left abandoned for a long long while, until it was rejuvinated and reopened a few years back! There are so many paths and twists and turns and every one takes you to a gorgeous new part of the gardens. My favourite part is the pagoda overlooking the stream. See if you can find it!

Tak is what I’d call a world foods supermarket. All kinds of foods you wouldn’t get in your typical British supermarket. If you know what I mean - this is where you need to go for the more exotic foods you’re after. If you don’t go for the experience of stuff you’ve probably never seen before.

Food Scene

Award winning. Praised by Italians. Family run. Run by my family, actually! My cousin Ryan started up Little Furnace 5 years ago with his friend Peter, slinging pizzas out of a tent with a little oven at a street market. Fast forward and they’ve got two permanent sites and make the best pizza in the city. If you’re a fan of pizza, you need to get yourself down to Little Furnace. It’s just a short walk away so you’d be crazy to miss out!

If it’s breakfast you’re looking for - The Tavern Co. is the place to go. Widely regarded as the best breakfast in Liverpool, this American/Mexican restaurant won the Nation’s Best Breakfast Award for 2014/2015. It’s just a little bit further down Smithdown Road than Little Furnace.

Drinks & Nightlife

Named as “The Coolest Place to Live in the UK”, the Baltic Triangle has bars, cafes, arty places and a food hall with an ever-changign roster of amazing vendors. It’s got the Baltic Market (the aformementioned food hall), Camp and Furnace (the home of Bongo’s Bingo), Constellations (a really cool bar) and so many other places for you to check out. There are also two festivals run here in the summer so it should definitely be on your list.

Concert Square is the “pop” part of town. Dance music, various clubs, and an outside hookah lounge. There are tons of clubs all around Concert Square including Popworld (full of cheesy 90’s pop), Elektric (for three floors of rock music), and Bar CaVa (for 30 different flavours of tequila). You’ve got all bases covered.

Matthew Street: home of the Cavern Club, where the Beatles played nearly 300 times. As a result, Matthew Street is the place for old school tunes. Plently of Beatles, mod rock, 80’s, and 90’s pop. If it’s a night of throwbacks your after; Matthew Street is the one for you.

If you’re not into the whole nightclub thing and pubs are more for you - you’ll want to stick to the Georgian Quarter. From Ye Cracke (pictured pronounced “The Crack”), to Peter Kavanaghs there are plenty of pubs in this area to whet your whistle and feel like a real local.

A Beatles landmark. Recently James Corden had Paul McCartney ride along with him for his Carpool Karaoke. Can you find Paul’s signature on the road sign?

The Church of St Luke, locally known as the Bombed Out Church, is another Liverpool landmark. It was badly damaged in the Liverpool Blitz in 1941 and has remained roofless ever since. It’s been renovated in recent years to become a site for all kinds of cultural events. Sitting at the top of Bold Street, you can get a snap on your way into town for a bite to eat.

The second of our cathedrals, the Metropolitan is equally beautiful and looks amazing all lit up in the dark. Unfortunately you can’t go up to the top of this one, but it’s still spectacular.

I’m not sure if this place is highlighted in the typical Liverpool tourism guides but it’s an absolute must. Local artist Paul Curtis painted these back in August 2017. As I’m sure you know the Liver Bird is THE symbol of Liverpool. And these are the Liver Bird wings. as the little caption says next to them “for all Liverpool’s Liver Birds”.

The Lambanana is another Liverpool landmark and symbol of the city. Designed by Japanese artist Taro Chiezo and created by four local artists, the Lambanana was developed for the 1998 ArtTransPennine Exhibition. The sculpture is a comment on the dangers of genetic engineering and also heavily influenced Liverpool’s history: historically both sheep and bananas were common cargos in the city's docks. Shown above is the orginal, standing at 5.8 metres tall. But all over the city you’ll spot the 2-metre Superlambananas. They were created to celebrate the city’s 2008 Capital of Culture win and are painted in various ways to match their local environments. How many can you find?

Everton Brow is an amazing place to see the city from. Daytime is one thing, and the night is completely another. Plus, it’s a nice place for a picnic if the weather is nice.

Once you’ve found The Beatles, all that’s left to do is turn around and see the Royal Liver Building. With our two Liver Birds on top. One faces the river, to watch over those going out to see. One faces the city, to watch over the rest of us at home. Legend says that if the Liver Birds were to fly away, Liverpool would sink - and that’s why they’re tied down. At least that’s what my grandad always used to tell me
