A jewel of a place! St Jean de Cole is rated as one of the top 10 most beautiful villages in France: and it is stunningly beautiful! It's quiet quaint streets draw you in. The River Cole runs gently through it. The village square is flanked on one side by the Chateau de la Marthonie and on the other side by the Romanesque Byzantine church of St Jean Baptiste, built in the Xll Century. Sit and have a coffee or lunch in the square overlooking this inspiring view.

Bourdeilles is a lovely village which sits on the edge of the river Dronne and boasts a chateau, a moulin (mill), a medieval centre and a panoramic viewpoint. Its main feature is its chateau which is actually two castles. There is a fortress dating back to the 13th and 14th century and which has defensive walls and an octagonal donjon 35 meters tall. Within the walls there is also a second chateau built in the Renaissance style during the 16th century. It's a lovely place to gaze at the stunning river, perhaps have a paddle, and enjoy a coffee or lunch in the sunshine. Close by is horse-riding at La Ferme Equestre du Naudonnet. Horse riding, for beginners and advanced. From age 8 if children already have pony experience, from age 10 if they don’t. Discover the nature of the Périgord, the forest and hills around Bourdeilles. Discover the herd that lives in freedom on a 16-hectare property and comes galloping when called.

The highlight of a trip to Bergerac is the old town - the area immediately north of the river, signposted 'vieille ville'. This part of the town has some lovely streets and squares to explore, and a variety of boutique type shops. The old town centres around Place Pelissiere which is a lovely square edged with cafes and restaurants and always full of flowers. At the top edge is the St James church with its attractive bell-tower. Around Place Pelissiere are a number of lovely medieval streets with half-timbered houses. Down towards the river is another lovely square - the Place Mirpe surrounded by half-timbered buildings and offering some welcome shade in the summer. Visit the Maison de Vins de Bergerac in the heart of the old town. It is a beautiful old cloister dating back to the 12th century. If you are a wine enthusiast there is an exhibition showing the history of Bergerac wines and its 13 appellations. During the summer there are occasional concerts which take place in the cloister. It is a lovely setting for them and worth going if you get the chance. In December there is usually a small but good quality Christmas Market here with products from local artisans, very useful if you are doing some Christmas shopping. The National Tobacco Museum is based here in Bergerac, and is apparently very interesting.

Parks & Nature

St Estephe lake is beautiful and has all the facilities for a great family day out. There is a safe sandy beach for swimming, free kayak hire, a bar/restaurant, food/drink kiosks, 'arbre fun' (nets in the trees), archery, a walking trail, cycling tracks, play area and picnic areas. In the little village of St Estephe is a sweet little café/brocante (antiquities) called Le Petit Baigneur. There are a couple of tables and chairs at the front alongside the road and there is just something special about sitting having a coffee in the sunshine there. We love it.

Arts & Culture

The caves have 600 metres of passageways and galleries. All the ceilings, walls and floors are spiked with stalagmites ad stalactites. The pure colours of white and slightly ochre are wonderful. There is also some cave art. Set in 2 hectares of park, there is now an interactive prehistoric garden. There is a picnic area, bar, icecream, shaded patio, picnic room and play area. There are walks in the nearby woods. Great for a family day out.

The Chateau de Bourdeilles dominates the village and is the center of a visit. In fact the 'chateau de Bourdeilles' consists of two distinct castles - an older castle, and then a larger more recent renaissance castle. The older fortress section, dating from the 13th century, is the part containing the impressive octagonal keep that dominates the skyline of the town, while the adjoining newer 16th century chateau is an altogether more refined building, with rich furnishings throughout. The chateau gardens are very traditional French style - plenty of small meticulously shaped shrubs - and give a lovely backdrop to the chateau.

A moving experience to see the ruins of the village which gained its importance in French history when it was completely destroyed by the retreating forces of the German SS on the 10th June 1944. The destruction of the village also included the murder of all its 642 inhabitants (except a very few who managed to escape) and also some others who were just passing through the village.
