Built in the early 1930s, Chatham Village is a model planned community with rowhouses, garden courts, greenbelt and recreation facilities opened through the Buhl Foundation to promote social reforms and housing improvements for middle-income families. This influenced the development of 20th century urban planning in the US. Chatham Village was built 1932–1936, and was designed by Clarence Stein and Henry Wright on the principles of the Garden City Movement of the early 20th century. It is in the Georgian Colonial Revival style. It was built to show that affordable housing for the working class could be attractive and safe, however it quickly became a middle- and upper-class neighborhood b

H.H. Richardson's masterpiece (in my opinion). Millions were spend on rehabilitating and refurnishing its Romanesque exterior, interior stairways and courtrooms (one restored to its initial height dimensions). A self-guiding tour book is available for visitors. On Mondays only, from 11:30 am - 1 pm the Old Jail is open for visiting, as well. The building is still connected by a (still-used) replica of the original "Bridge of Sighs". Children used to be locked up in the Jail when it was operating. I took pictures of each of my friends behind bars...a truly memorable experience for them and for me.

The Heinz Memorial Chapel began as a gift. Henry John Heinz, the founder of the H.J. Heinz Company, wanted to honor his mother, Anna Margaretta Heinz, with “a building” at the University. When the cornerstone of the chapel was laid in 1934, University Chancellor John Bowman said, “The Chapel is designed as a fitting center for worship which in various ways will rise at the University. The character, intensity, the level of that worship may change from generation to generation. The spiritual tide in men rises and falls. Through these changes, though, the Chapel will stand, calm and undisturbed.”

Tucked away in a quiet neighbourhood atop Troy Hill, this tranquil place is an essential stop if visiting Pittsburgh. When I walked through the door I could feel an unknown energy. We were fortunate enough to listen to a guide give a brilliant talk about the founder of the chapel, Father Mollinger, the relics he collected from Europe is the midst of the Franco-Prussian war, and his healing both body and soul of hundreds of thousands of people. What a fascinating, fulfilling life. After an hour of the guide’s talk and appreciating the beautiful stations of the cross, I left the chapel feeling rather humble and exhausted. I look forward to going back many times.

The Duquesne Incline is a historic and fun ride. Seniors ride free. The views are spectacular. You can see downtown Pittsburgh and the gorgeous architecture of the buildings. You can see the Point and many bridges. Also, you can see Heinz Field and PNC Park. You are right where the three rivers meet. Up on Mt. Washington, there are very good nearby restaurants. A trip at night is worth it to see the city lit up. This historic mechanized wood car transports 18 people or up to 5,000 lbs. The traveling distance is about 0.25 miles. It served people living at the top since 1872. In 1962, there was talk about dismantling it because of lack of ridership and maintenance cost. Cash Only $2.50

Pittsburgh's Strip District is special. It consists of about 4 blocks full of authentic ethnic grocers and shops. Where else will you find an Italian, Greek, Mexican and Polish store almost next to each other. Then there are the coffee and seafood stores too. Restaurants; butcher shops. bakeries. Even people selling Steelers, Pirate & Penguin gear. It's all here. It's safe as well. Don't miss: Jimmy&Nino's, Pennsylvania Macaroni Co, Strip Dist Meats, LaPrima Coffee, Pamela's Diner, Stamoulis Greek store, Bring a cooler and cash. is it fancy..NO WAY. Is it fun...YES. If you are planning on food shopping bring your cooler with ice and park at 18th & Penn. cost is $10 bucks but well worth it!

What a beautiful amd historic bridge. I understand that its a bridge and utilitarian. However, this is one of the three sisters which are all fantastic spans. I enjoyed walking across with my son on game day. What a true legend of baseball this bridge is named for. Not many players like him and not many bridges will stand the test of time as the 3 sisters have.

Arts & Culture

I felt compelled to visit and we were absolutely delighted we chose to do so. The building is unassuming but step inside and I felt transported to a different world. There were bikes everywhere, of every description and vintage. The ether smelled of bikes. My memory was taken back to my childhood and cycling in the hills with my pals on their Raleigh Choppers. Over 3000 bicycles crammed into every nook and cranny. I felt the passion of the person who had amassed this wonderful collection. What a place, what fun, what nostalgia.

The gardens were founded in 1893 by steel and real-estate magnate Henry Phipps as a gift to the City of Pittsburgh. Its purpose is to educate and entertain the people of Pittsburgh with formal gardens (Roman, English, etc.) and various species of exotic plants (palm trees, succulents, bonsai, orchids, etc.). Currently, the facilities house elaborate gardens within the fourteen room conservatory itself and on the adjoining grounds. In addition to its primary flora exhibits, the sophisticated glass and metalwork of the Lord & Burnham conservatory offers an interesting example of Victorian greenhouse architecture.

The Nationality Rooms are located within the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh. The Cathedral itself is a beautiful sight and the Nationality Rooms are a great feature. There are two options to see the Nationality Rooms- one was free and the other floor of rooms cost a small amount of money. We chose the free version and saw about 20 different rooms. The rooms are designed as a snapshot in history of different cultures around the world. They feature local craftsmanship, artifacts, and artwork from that time period. Make sure you flip a switch when you go into each room, a narrator will describe the room in detail. The one floor took us about an hour.

In a word, this museum was great, far exceeding my expectations. It was great for kids to learn about the region’s high impact on history. I have a newfound appreciation for Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania on a whole. Whether the museum cited historical figures like Carnegie or Dr. Salk, highlighted impact on history such as the Pennsylvania company that built the first Willy’s Jeeps, to having fun with kids’ hands on activities, this museum is a one stop shop. If you are passing through or staying in Pittsburgh, you will come out enriched after a few hours here. The place is laid out over six stories with new displays with interesting information. The Slavery to Freedom exhibit was fantastic!

I found the University of Pittsburgh to be a delight to wander around. It shows off a variety of styles, including Beaux-Arts, Greek Revival, Italian Renaissance and Modern. The masterpiece here, however, remains the 42-story Late Gothic Revival Cathedral of Learning. After staring at the exterior of the beautifully cleaned, 1931 steel-frame, Indiana-limestone high rise, I went inside for about 90 minutes. The massive 4-story Gothic Commons Room captured my attention as did the few Nationality Rooms that I could enter because no lectures were under way in them during my visit. Thirty of these rooms are located on the first and third floors with each designed to show off a culture.

The tour is self-guided, although there are knowledgeable employees available to answer questions. The tour provides a glimpse of the conditions on board, particularly the close quarters in which the sailors had to operate. Note how cramped the heads (toilets) and showers are. There's little room available for anything. The levers, knobs, and dials alone took up so much space! Tickets are $7 for the tour by itself, but it's included with the admission price of the science museum, which is right next door.

Located on the North Side amongst a complex of museums (Childrens', Mattress) and performing venues the facility offers patrons of all ages the opportunity to see a variety of habitats, watch feedings, have the birds sweep and swoop around you in the rainforest, see penguins from above and below and for an extra charge view a show based in the Amazon where birds and a special appearance by a sloth entertain while the makeup, complexity and necessity of the Amazon rain forest was explained.

A local artist Randy transformed the exterior of the house and the inner courtyard into an eclectic compilation of his work. He used a lot of vibrant colors and items recovered from the neighborhood as part of his art. Randy lives inside the house and comes out to paint or socialize with his visitors. Visiting was free but he has a small souvenir shack which looked to be on an honor system. Do not miss this free, outstanding work of street art and folk art.

A visit to the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh is essential for families visiting Pittsburgh with children ages 6 and under. The exhibits prioritize action and learning by doing, plus are extremely fun. Compared to other Children's Museums that I've been to, I find that this museum has an emphasis on makerspaces and engineering, plus the arts. The rotating exhibits are always great, on this visit we saw the Mo Williams exhibit which was top notch. We also love the art area and always come home with fantastic pieces that the kids have made.

It is amazing! Added bonus was their military discount it was 50% off the day we went. The layout is great so even though it was really busy it didn't seem like it because there is so much room and things spread out. So much to do here, you almost need more than a day to do it all. Fun sports themed area with a lot of activities for kids to run off some steam. Train display had to be the highlight. One of the latest in the world and is a Pittsburgh gem with incredibly detailed.

The museum has plenty of exhibits to see and learn more about Andy Warhol. I thought it was interesting to see the works of art from the different periods of his life. If you are going to go here I would suggest comfortable shoes because you will be walking on concrete floors. Great museum with a wonderful story and collection of Andy Warhol art and history. This was a beautiful way to spend a Sunday. I had made reservations to take the tour of the main house. Our docent was very nice. We had about 8 total on our tour of the house. What a beautiful look at how the wealthy lived back in the day. After the house tour you are free to walk the grounds. On the grounds is a beautiful green house that you can go in and walk around. There is a car museum that you can go through and the cars are just beautiful. I can't imagine life back then but it looked pretty awesome. There is a wonderful gift shop that you actually start in.

Top 5 Ballparks in MLB Recently took my family to a Pirates game here at PNC and I can’t say enough about how great this park is. There isn’t a bad seat in the house, food is reasonably priced and the staff who work there are so nice and helpful. They even have a little playground to keep the kids occupied when they need to get up from their seats. The views of the game and the city landscape are breathtaking. A must for any baseball fan!!!

Pittsburgh has world-class cultural entertainment - symphony, ballet, musical theater, plays, musicians, speakers - and the most stunning place to view and listen to it all is in Heinz Hall. From the soaring ceilings, to the massively gorgeous chandeliers to the gold-leaf painted walls and comfortable seats, Heinz Hall is a place to make memories and appreciate the beauty of architecture while being thoroughly entertained. There is something for everyone to see at Heinz Hall. I live in Pittsburgh, and am lucky to visit this beautiful Hall at least 6 times a year.

Schneley Park is a great place to walk around! There are great jogging and walking trails that are both paved and unpaved. If you prefer trail runs, this is a great place. Strollers are easy to use at Schenley Park. There are trails, a golf course, tennis courts, many other amenities. It wanders from Squirrel Hill to Oakland showing a lot of what makes the "Burgh' a great neighborhood city with a lot of green space. They hold classic car races and other events throughout the park. Legend has it that when steel baron Henry Clay Frick's daughter turned 16, he asked her what she wanted for her birthday. She replied that she would like a park where she and her friends could play. Frick purchased hundreds of acres of wooded land adjacent to his mansion on Penn Avenue. When he died he donated 106 acres of his acquisition to the City of Pittsburgh. Over time the City acquired adjoining land and opened Frick Park in 1927. Today the park covers 644 acres, stretching from Point Breeze to the Monongahela River. The park has at least two large playgrounds, ball fields, picnic areas, a delightful café which serves lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch and High Tea. I can tell you more!!!!!

I love coming here in the all four seasons!Being located at the very tip of the three rivers, Point State Park offers great views of Pittsburgh's downtown, stadiums and Mt Washington. It has such a wonderful view at the confluence of the 2 rivers. The fountain is spectacular. If you can get the right angle with the sun the spray creates a wonderful rainbow. Obviously the best time is when it's sunny. If your riding around town on a bike for fun, this is a must place to stop and smell the roses. The surrounding gardens are just as nice.

Here is another hidden gem and one of the most magnificent views of the city bar none. Located at the sharp turn at Baily Avenue (right, it's nowhere near Grandview Ave) it's one of those places you could totally miss if you didn't know it was there. Lot of activities here, yoga classes, movies in the park, and more. Lots of benches for relaxing Seems to be a park a lot of people bring their dogs for walking The view of downtown, it's buildings, the rivers, and even Oakland is one of the best in town. Parking can be hard, as it's street parking. Best to walk to the park.

When approaching Highland Park from North Highland Avenue you're greeted by the entry garden and fountain, which reminds me of something you'd likely see in Europe. The Victorian-style entrance with well-maintained gardens draws you in and from there you forget that you're only a few miles from downtown. Walk a bit further and you'll begin to see all that the park has to offer. You'll find that the park boasts a couple playgrounds, some swimming pools, athletic courts, trails - both flat and hilly, paths along the reservoir and more. So, get out and explore!

I love coming here for Bach Beethoven and Brunch. Try to get there early 9am if you want to be in the front near the orchestra or meander around the back and find a shady spot under a huge tree with your picnic. Always bring a big soft blanket so you can lay down. Mellon Park also hosts " A Fair in the Park " you will find music, fine arts, food, and fun! You can buy some great plants at the Phipps garden center adjacent to this Sunday event.

From the riverfront path (good for walking, jogging, biking, strollers, etc.) to the close proximity to both Heinz Field and PNC Park to the water steps for kids, this beautiful park is a gem of downtown Pittsburgh! Oh how I enjoy strolling through here. Even when it's crowded there's still a sense of peace mixed with excitement.
