15 km from Port Alfred you will find Bathurst, full of historical buildings, restaurants and quaintness; a perfect little English village labelled by CNN in 2014 as South Africa’s most eccentric town. People meet at the Pig & Whistle (South Africa's oldest pub). On the way to Bathurst you pass the giant pineapple, which is fun for children along. Visit the weekly Sunday farmers’ market.

Kenton-on sea is just plain beautiful, situated on a pristine piece of South African coastline between the Kariega and Bushmans rivers. Enjoy the canoe trail or take in the local night life (for the younger generation).

Port Alfred’s marina holds blue flag status with a 250-berth small boat harbour alongside the Royal Alfred Marina. It’s home to private boats of every shape and size and one of the prettiest harbours I've seen in a long while.

Food scene and art

The arts and crafts in the area are well known, with many acclaimed artists living and working here. Visit their studios, watch them at work, or join our local art clubs and explore your creative side. The Sunshine Coast also boasts wonderful culinary experiences, from cosmopolitan cafes to lavish banquets and everything in between. We even have our own brewery!
Wharf Street is a collection of restored and in-need-of-restoration 19th-century buildings. It’s upstream from the river mouth. Here you find The Wharf Street Brew Pub with is huge dining room of exposed stone and brick, craft brew on tap. Next door is the Little Brewery with its own brewing and fermentation rooms and a bottling corner. Pop in for tasters of their pilsner and ale. The two lie in the only stone building in town and an historical landmark that functioned as a harbour master’s, a city hall, a goods store and a cinema. This was the original commercial street of Port Alfred back in the 1820s
