To see in Fabriano

Fabriano has a medieval center, beautiful artwork in its many historic churches, unique museums and great food scene! It is a UNESCO creative city for craftsmanship.
Fabriano was founded in the middle ages, and became a prosperous center for paper making, bringing breakthrough changes to the technology. It was part of the Pope State of Central Italy and governed at times by local lords, or people’s elected Podestà (Governors). This story of centuries is told by our many churches, remarkable artwork by Gentileschi, Guercino, Donatello, Bellini and Gothic frescos by Allegretto di Nunzio. The town was the birthplace of Gentile da Fabriano, Italy's greatest master of the late 14th Century International Gothic style of painting. His rare paintings are now in Florence, Paris and New York. In the early '900 Fabriano was a prominent industrial centre thanks to its paper factory and several mills along the river, in this period the architect Giulio Meloni left his heritage of art deco and eclectic style.

Cattedrale di San Venanzio One of the most elegant 1700's church facades, this church keep art jewels from different centuries, the external absis is Gotic from the 1200's original building. Inside are 2 side chapels frescoed by Gentileschi, a 17thC follower of Caravaggio who ended his days as court painter to King Charles I of England. Look for the Gothic chapels of Saint Lorenzo by Allegretto Nunzi behind the choir, and more gothic frescos in the sagresty, these survived the 1500's remodeling; glass work over the entrance is by Guelfo (1980’s) a stained glass artist; the stone baptismal fountain from 1100’s comes from a smaller country church.
