Just five miles east of Santo Domingo, Los Tres Ojos National Park is a beautiful nature break from the city, and offers a solid glimpse of the Taino’s underground caverns once used for refuge or rituals. A winding entrance staircase leads to a series of caves, with pathways hugging three freshwater, iridescent blue lagoons or “eyes” as the Taino used to call them for their oval-shapes. A fourth lagoon is accessible via a small wooden barge, revealing a gorgeous, open-air scenery of water and a rocky landscape covered in lush vegetation all around. Keep an eye out for petroglyphs and pottery shards. https://www.godominicanrepublic.com/poi/caving/santo-domingo/parque-nacional-los-tres-ojos/

The city’s youngest museum, inaugurated in 2011, the Telecommunications Cultural Center is also one of the most interesting, showcasing the history and evolution of media in the Dominican Republic, from television to radio, and the internet up to the 20th century and beyond. The three-story building has a modern façade that stands out from surrounding colonial buildings on Calle Isabel La Católica, and its interior exhibits showcase old communications instruments, as well as a robotics room, an electronic game room, and an audio-visual media library. https://www.godominicanrepublic.com/poi/colonial-city/santo-domingo/centro-cultural-de-las-telecomunicaciones/

The city dweller’s beach, Boca Chica is as synonymous with Santo Domingo as any of its principal sights. A forty-minute drive lands you on this beautiful white sand beach town, filled with an authentic Dominican bustle: vendors hawking wares, hotels and restaurants lining the sand, and rows of fry fish shacks selling an authentic lunch of red snapper, tostones, and yaniqueques. Adults enjoy meals and cold beers on the beach to the sound of merengue and bachata, while the children frolic in the shallow, calm turquoise waters that make Boca Chica a family favorite. On the eastern edge of town are a row of swanky beach clubs and restaurants offering a seafront lounge atmosphere.

One of only two Chinatowns in the Caribbean, completed in 2008, Santo Domingo’s Barrio Chino is located directly north of the Colonial City. Signature Chinese gates mark the start and end of the neighborhood, running principally along Avenida Duarte, and stretching across Mexico, Mella, and Benito González avenues. Sculptures of key Chinese figures dot the streets, from a monk to life-size lions. The city’s most authentic Chinese restaurants are found here, as well as multiple Chinese grocery stores, a street vegetable market every Sunday, and other local shops selling clothing to housewares. The neighborhood’s unique Chinese-Caribbean pulse is worth experiencing.

A time-honored restaurant in the Zona Colonial (Colonial Zone), Mesón d'Bari serves fresh regional fare in a restored, two-story house. Inside, the restaurant contains brick archways, white-clothed tables, and large, for-sale paintings by local artists. The menu, printed in three languages, includes specialties like cangrejo guisado (fresh crab stewed in brown sauce) and filete a la criolla (Creole-style filet of beef with tomatoes, onions, and sweet peppers). The bar is a popular hangout for local businessmen, artists, and baseball players, so expect the TV to be tuned into a game. The restaurant also hosts live merengue music on most weekends.
