The Zuishin-in temple [1 min on foot] Founded A.D911
Main hall is available between 9:00-16:30
You can enjoy this ancient temple as a real neighbor.
A morning walk around this temple can give you sacred moment in your busy sight seeing days.
In the beginning of the 10th century, The legendary master monk Ningai-sojo the "Rain caller" was given the land of here as a reward of his rain calling to solve the drought of this region and founded a temple as Gyuhizan-mandaraji(the Temple of Mandara on cow hide) .This is the origin of the Zuishin-in.
So There is the shrine dedicated to Rain dragon deity (Seiryu-gongen) behind the main hall.
This ancient temple is not so famous among foreign tourist yet but it's well known among Japanese tourists for well preserved architecture, nationally designated important cultural treasures and beautiful garden filled with plum trees.
On the other side, a Legend says that before this place became a temple, the most beautiful female poet "the lady Komachi"( the 9th century) settled down here and spent her life time to the end.
Because of this legend, Now This temple is also known as a holy place for poets.
Behind the temple, You can find "the tomb of love letters" that she got. Let's feel sympathy for the men whom the Lady had dumped.

My favorite(essential diet) is Atsuage(fried tofu.) You can bring them back to your room and grill them 5min in gas stove at kitchen. a bit soy sauce on them( sometime,a bit ground ginger with them) You can enjoy real the happy 1st step of Japanese cuisine.
Tofu(square ) : 3 kinds.
Momen dofu: Most general Tofu. Strong texture and taste for cooking.
Kinu dofu : Softer texture and milder taste for salad or as it is(should be cold and with soy sauce and chopped long onion).
Shiro dofu : Between 2 above.
Yose（Oboro) dofu : Non square solid tofu in a cup. Creamy texture and taste. the best with Ponzu(citrus flavored vinegar and soy sauce ) and Katsuo-bushi (thin sliced dried bonito) on it. by spoon.
Atsu-age (Fried tofu) : Triangle shape. Grill it and put soy sauce and a bit ground ginger on it.
Kinu-age (Fried Kinu-dofu ) : Same as above one. but Softer texture inside.
Nama-Yuba : Yuba is the Kyoto's special, monks favorite. Shape is like paper sheet. Essential ingredient for Shojin-Ryori (buddhist's cuisine ).
You should try this even if you are not vegetarian. because very Yuba represents traditional kyoto food culture.
