Groceries
One of the first things people do when getting here is run out to buy groceries. The Food lion is only about 1 1/2 miles away, very convenient. It is a smaller store, basic but has everything. If you want gourmet Publix and Ingles are about 4 miles away, fairly quick ride.

Food scene
Waynesville is home to several nearby microbreweries, all worth checking out: Boojum, Bear Waters, Mad Anthonys, Frog Level. In Sylva there are also several more really good breweries. In Asheville there are literally about 100 breweries.

AWESOME outside seating by the creek. Beer is OK to good but the location is superlative in nice weather. Get the Salamander Slam or Nutty Blonde Ale for beers. NO FOOD here usually.

Sightseeing
There is an entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway off the Smoky Mountain Expressway in Waynesville (there's one in Maggie Valley too - but it's much further away). The one near my house is less than 15 min drive - and as a bonus you pass Barber's Orchard where in the fall you can buy apples (duh) but unbelievably (carbo-) Delicious apple fritters, pies, jams, etc, etc. Want a jar of jalapeno jelly? This is the place, :)
Well of course, you're going on the BRP to go sight seeing, not just eat fritters, So once at the BRP entrance go North toward Asheville (about 1 1/2 hr drive if you don't stop too much, but that's the idea, right?) or go South to Water Rock Knob for a steep uphill hike and beautiful views.

Just walking around the historic (1950's) downtown is awesome. There are many nice stores selling art and many places to eat.

There's no comparison to the Biltmore estate. It is amazing. It's EXPENSIVE! But you can spend the whole day on the property once you have access. OF course there's the house (allow 2 hours), several places to eat on property. There are bike rentals, bike trails, horse-back trail riding (reservations are required), trap shooting and just hiking or walking. They have complimentary wine tastings at Antler Village (part of the estate) and again, a reservation is required but can frequently be made the day of the visit.
Allow at least 45 minutes to drive there.

You'll need a car, Asheville
As of this writing, there is NO Uber/Lyft in the Lake Junaluska/Waynesville/Maggie Valley area.
Asheville has horrible traffic and parking is difficult. You can easily get around AVL with Uber/Lyft once you are in AVL and nail a good parking space!
One of the most popular is Sierra Nevada brewer, good food and beer BUT it's a longish (10 mile) drive from Asheville, My favorites IN AVL Wicked Weed, New Belgium.

Weather usually mild except winter
The weather is awesome here. Summer could hit 100, but usually not more than 90 - 92 F. Winter, well, it can snow, worst case scenario is ice, but it's rare.

Cataloochee Ski Resort
The Ski Mountain is only about 15 minutes from my house. If you come to ski, there's a "NO SKI EQUIPMENT IN THE HOUSE" rule but there's plenty of outside storage, including an attached storage shed.
