Parks and Nature

The 900-foot Edgewater Beach and 650-foot Euclid Beach Park were recently acquired by this acclaimed park system. Much to the glee of locals (and just about anyone with eyeballs), the parks received some seriously transformative facelifts. The result? Expansive sandy beaches and tons of outdoor activity offerings — all equating to the perfect spot to catch a Lake Erie sunset.

If it’s possible to have a pride and joy within a pride and joy, the Cleveland Metropark Zoo is, quite possibly, the jewel of the “Emerald Necklace” that is the Cleveland Metroparks system. The sprawling, 183-acre indoor/outdoor facility is home to more than 3,000 animals representing north of 600 different species. The zoo features seven main exhibits, including a five-acre elephant crossing, an eight-acre Australian habitat and an African savannah that's so realistic that if it weren't for the sidewalks, strollers and school groups, you’d think you were watching the bonteboks feed in Namibia.

Sightseeing

The Tremont neighborhood sign features a backdrop of the majestic Innerbelt and Shoreway bridges, as well as a wide view of the tallest structures in the city like Terminal Tower and Key Tower. At night, some visitors like to add some bang to their shots by taking photos when the Indians have a fireworks show at Progressive Field. Spend a day (or night) in Tremont, which boasts an even mix of indie art galleries, cool boutiques and amazing culinary experiences.

From Public Square, take a short walk down Euclid Ave. and you’re suddenly surrounded by the spectacular vibrancy of historic theaters, sparkling marquees, a contemporary streetscape, bustling storefronts-turned-restaurants and a dazzling outdoor chandelier. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself uttering out loud, “Wait … where am I?” We’re talking about Playhouse Square, one of the largest performing arts centers in the United States with its impressive collection of 10 performance spaces, including five theaters restored to their original 1920s elegance. Every year, Playhouse Square hosts more than 1,000 events, including some of the biggest titles on Broadway (ever heard of "Hamilton?"). But it’s not just theater. Playhouse Square features concerts, comedy, dance performances and children’s programing to packed houses just about every night. WHAT YOU’LL SEE: When you’re here, it’s easy to forget where you are. The brilliant marquees, the shimmering outdoor chandelier and the bustling after-dinner crowd all feel more Times Square than Playhouse Square. Any one of the five main theaters in Playhouse Square — Allen Theatre, Connor Palace, Hanna Theatre, KeyBank State Theatre and Ohio Theatre — are all worth seeing in person whether there’s a show or not. All were built between 1921-1922 and restored to their original opulence in the 1970s and ‘80s. Don’t leave without getting an Insta-worthy shot of the GE Chandelier that hangs outside above East 14th Street. (As the world's largest outdoor chandelier, it’s impossible to miss.)

Food scene

You could carve an entire trip out of Cleveland’s rich culinary history. Or you could cram much of it into one simple stop at the historic West Side Market. The indoor, European-style market has been around for more than a century and still looks like it did when it catered to the immigrant community all those years ago: vendors hawking Old-World baked goods; family-owned stands displaying their colorful produce; fishmongers offering smoked fish and eels; classic butcher cases filled with sausages and animal guts — it’s not just steaks and salmon filets here, kids. Today it’s surrounded by the city’s hottest restaurants and breweries, turning the area on and near the corner of West 25th Street and Lorain Ave. into arguably the most happening blocks in Cleveland. At the center of it all? The city’s most famous grocery store. WHAT YOU’LL SEE: This is simple: Upon entering the long, narrow, granite structure, you’ll see row after row after row of vendors. More than 100, in fact. Some are there to sell locals their weekly produce and proteins. Others specialize in sausages of all types, hot sauces, fresh baked goods and Cleveland’s beloved pierogies. Go to the breweries and brewpubs. Within just a few blocks you can hit some of the landmarks: Market Garden, Nano Brew Cleveland and the godfather of Cleveland’s recent craft beer boom, Great Lakes Brewing Company.
The West Side Market is the oldest operating indoor/outdoor market space in Cleveland, Ohio. It is located at the corner of West 25th Street and Lorain Avenue in the Ohio City neighborhood. On December 18, 1973, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Art & Culture

If you are a music fan this is a must see! It covers all genres of music and has some fabulous artifacts, exhibits and media.
Here’s a fact: When you visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, you and your companions aren’t going to agree on everything. It happens all the time — you enter as friends, you leave as … friends who can’t decide if Pearl Jam is more or less worthy of inclusion than, say, Journey. No Rock Hall visitor leaves without weighing in on who should and shouldn’t be included in the hall of fame. Elvis? The Beatles? Those are no-brainers. Madonna and Run DMC? Talk amongst yourselves. WHY CLEVELAND? In 2017 alone, more than a half million visitors, each with their own favorites and memories (and opinions), visited the iconic I.M. Pei-designed Rock Hall, which opened in 1995. At first, music fans were left scratching their heads: Why Cleveland? But our city has a checklist of serious rock bona fides: • Cleveland DJ Alan Freed is credited with coining the term “rock ‘n’ roll” on his integrated radio show in 1951. • We are credited with holding the country’s first official rock ‘n’ roll concert, a 1952 throw down that would ultimately be shut down for overcrowding and rioting. • Fourteen years later, the same thing would happen at a legendary Beatles show at Cleveland’s famed Public Hall. That’s just how we roll, here. • Our legendary radio station WMMS-FM is credited with helping to launch the careers of some of rock’s biggest names, including David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen and Fleetwood Mac. WHAT YOU'LL SEE: • Visitors can expect to see one of the most impressive collections of memorabilia ever assembled — from John Lennon’s guitar to hip-hop pioneer Jam Master Jay’s gold chains. • The Rock Hall also showcases a number of temporary, traveling installations throughout the year. Recent exhibits included a history of women in rock, "Girls to the Front," and a Paul Simon retrospective. WHAT ELSE TO DO? • It’s not all history. The Rock Hall offers special concert events like the annual Catch Meaning Music Fest in May, as well as a very popular summertime outdoor concert series. • Don’t forget the induction ceremony and concert: Every two years, the biggest stars in rock history get enshrined into the Hall of Fame on its home turf in Cleveland.

Museum

Back in the early 1980s, producers of the classic holiday film "A Christmas Story" — based on a story written by author Jean Shepherd — were seeking filming locations for what was supposed to look like an Indiana steel town in the '40s. They found their answer in a home located in the Cleveland neighborhood of Tremont. Originally built in 1895, the house underwent a serious of facelifts both before and after filming. In 2004, San Diego-based entrepreneur Brian Jones — a longtime fan of the film — bought the home on eBay and renovated it to once again match the scenes from the movie. He used profits from his own business (selling replicas of the movie’s iconic leg lamp) for the down payment. This means the 1983 holiday classic has become as much a part of our city as pierogies and craft beer. While you can see the Parkers' two-story Victorian on a continuous loop on TBS every Christmas, people from all over can come to Cleveland and visit it year-round. And boy, do they. WHAT YOU'LL SEE: Walk through an exact replica of the Parker family home. Admire the leg lamp's "soft glow of electric sex gleaming in the window." Take a selfie next to the Christmas tree. Grimace in a pink bunny suit. Hide under the kitchen sink. And, of course, hold the Red Ryder BB gun. But resist the temptation to fire it — you might shoot your eye out. WHAT ELSE TO DO? Two other homes across the street have been renovated into a gift shop and museum. The museum showcases behind-the-scenes photos and original props and costumes, including the original leg lamp, Ralphie’s bunny suit and the famous Red Ryder BB gun. In December, visitors can run in the A Christmas Story 5k/10k, which routes between Public Square in Downtown Cleveland and the house in Tremont. Hundreds of participants — from serious runners to stroller brigades — come out to enjoy this ridiculous winter fun-run where folks dress up like the movie’s characters (some even run wearing Leg Lamp costumes).

If you’ve never seen sharks being fed, jellyfish glowing like lava lamps or Lake Erie perch not dredged in batter and sitting on a pile of french fries, you need to come see the nearly 5,000 species of fresh and saltwater creatures swimming throughout this converted 19th-century power plant. Passionate aquarium employees mingle with guests, sharing interesting facts, leading hands-on demonstrations and answering your most important questions like, “Ew, what is that thing?!” The aquarium is located inside The Powerhouse, a brick landmark that once generated electric power for Cleveland’s streetcar lines and remains a lasting visual tribute to Cleveland’s industrial past.

Be honest — how much do you really remember from your class field trip to the natural history museum? There is no time like your vacay in Cleveland to see what you missed — or forgot — that first time around, now that your brain is fully formed. You’ll see rotating temporary exhibits all year long and a permanent collection that includes a cast of “Lucy,” our 3.2 million-year-old human ancestor, a full-sized replica of a T-Rex and the 70-foot-long, 14-foot-tall skeleton of “Happy,” the oldest sauropod on display in the world.

Entertaiment

This was the Cleveland area’s first casino and has since turned into a must-see stop in the energetic heart of Public Square. This isn’t James Bond — you definitely don’t have to wear a tuxedo to sit at the baccarat table. But if you want to throw down a bet at the JACK, bring your A game. This place is filled with all kinds of casino table gaming including blackjack, craps, poker and roulette. Located in the historic Higbee Building (once home to Higbee's Department Store), the opulent and completely smoke-free building is free to enter and open 24/7.
