Food scene

Although the house is in a remote location there are many good restaurants with authentic, simple, and fresh french food and good local wines and champagnes. For more local options drive into the town, no reservations needed. However, I find that when many guests visit they do not want to leave the house at all. In this case, guests can go grocery shopping in a variety of places and local boulangeries. The biggest grocery store that I recommend going to is the carrefour in dormans. Local store in Le Breuil is currently closed, so nearest bakery is in nearby villages of Orbaye l’Abaye or Conde en Brie by the old train station Closest supermarket in Dormans (Champion). Open-air market every Saturdays till noon at Dormans and Montmirail, and Condé-en-Brie every 1st Sunday of each month (April –October). Pharmacy: Closest pharmacy is located in Condé-en-Brie or Orbaye l’Abbaye.

The name of the restaurant/hotel is Auberge le Relais. Its a very pretty place and the restaurant and terrace have a gorgeous outlook. This is the fanciest and most expensive restaurant in the region but provides very good food. The property is worth visiting in its own for the beautiful grounds of the area. A large part of Café du Palais’ appeal lies in the décor: a stained-glass ceiling, artwork-covered walls and a bar lit by strips of coloured neon give the room a chic Art Deco vibe. It is, without a doubt, one of the most stylish dining establishments in Reims and atmospheric setting in which to enjoy a menu of French classics, such as foie gras, snails, morels, and cheese and meat spreads. Outside of lunch and dinner hours, they provide a snack menu with sharing plates. Call +33 3 26 47 52 54

If you enjoy fish, I recommend this restaurant by the best fishmonger in town. A tiny restaurant with an outstanding array of oysters from farmers such as David Hervé, A. Madec, and Gillardeau. Other fruits de Mer and dishes such as grilled lobster and sole are also excellent, and there’s a small but carefully selected list of good Champagne. Activites

Although the house is in a rural area, there are plenty of things to do at and around the picturesque setting of the house and the Champagne region. At the house: Volleyball, badminton, croquet, horseshoes, pétanque, mountain biking, hammock stored in the dining room closet. Other games in right upper dining room cabinet. Please keep in order for the next guest. You can also go mushroom hunting in the fall in the local woods east of the house. Cèpes are lower down, Trompètes de la Mort in higher woods. Be sure to have the pharmacy verify your harvest before eating! The vineyards and nearby forest are great for exploring on foot or bicycle, and several bikes are available at the house for guests. The nearby village of Le Breuil is a ten-minute walk down the hill. Le Breuil is home to a dozen or so excellent Champagne growers, and they are always happy to welcome in visitors for a tasting. The nearest boulangerie for morning croissant and baguettes is five minutes by car in Orbaye L'Abaye, and a large grocery store is in Dormans, about ten minutes' drive. The adjoining Marne Valley is well known for its role in military battles, and nearby Reims has a beautiful cathedral where the Kings of France were crowned, and a famous statue of Joan of Arc. Paris is within two hours' drive, making it within reach for a day trip, and Disneyland Paris is even closer.
If you like to golf I recommend visiting Golf du Val Secret in Château-Thierry. Around 30 minutes from the house. Website: https://golfvalsecret.com/

Want a new perspective on Champagne? See the patchwork of vine-strewn hills from above during one of Les Montgolfieres Champenoises hot air balloon rides. The rides tend to be at sunrise and sunset, which adds to the tranquillity of the sky-high excursion. Watch the sky come to life in an explosion of colors as you drift lazily in the ethereal light of dusk. Budding balloonists will be especially interested to know that this company allows passengers to get involved with different parts of the journey, whether preparing the canvas and basket or firing up the balloon while you are airborne. to book: Call +33 6 64 97 32 61

Learn about the secrets of distilling and the art of tasting, before trying a selection from their range accompanied by specially chosen local meats and cheeses, which will help bring out the flavours. Some of their whisky has been mature in Champagne casks, which gives it a distinctive flavour that sets it apart from many of its Scottish and Irish counterparts. Champagne Tours

If you want a more unique experience, I highly recommend visiting our neighbor and champagne maker, Philippe Mignon (a short walk or drive from the house) This is a unique experience because they use our grapes from the house to make the champagne. I recommend that you get into touch with Antoine, the main grower’s son and the manager of our portion of grapes. His phone number is 0677986606. I’m not sure if you speak French but he speaks both French and English. You can introduce yourself by saying that you are staying at La Ravenne or the “Tight”’s house, specifically Steve Tight. He will understand and would love to meet you to arrange to buy some of the best quality champagne in the region if you ask they will also be happy to give you a tour of the cave, where they make the champagne. Their factory and house are just down the street and he can direct you how to go if you are interested.

First established in around 650 following a prophetic vision by Saint-Nivard – the archbishop of Reims and nephew of Dagobert, King of the Franks – the Benedictine Abbey of Hautvillers was the home of Pierre Pérignon. The life and work of this famous procurator, who managed the assets of the monastic community from 1668 to 1715, is closely linked to the reputation of Champagne’s wine. The village of Hautvillers, including its ancient abbey, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2015 under the Champagne Hillsides, Houses and Cellars classification.
