Steeped in history and rich in natural features, this Conservation Area, located atop a 20 metre high limestone bluff, commands a panoramic view of Prince Edward Bay and the rugged shoreline of this southern reach of the county. Take the pathway to the cobblestone beach below and view the high bluff from a different perspective. There are 1.5 km of trails at this 28 hectare (70 acre) site. This quiet shoreline is actually a barrier beach, effectively protecting a small wetland from the windswept waters of Prince Edward Bay. Here, Canada geese, mallards, great blue herons, bitterns and Virginia rails find the protected habitat they require. A Little History This area contains the remains of a grain storage and docking facility where schooners once loaded barley destined for Oswego. During the 1860s to 1890s, all of Prince Edward County reveled in the wealth realized from the prosperous “Barley Days.”

Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area (NWA) was one of the first sites in Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Protected Areas Network to protect habitat for migratory passerine birds (songbirds). Located at the tip of a long peninsula on the northeast shore of Lake Ontario, at no other location on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario are birds known to occur in such high densities during migration. Over 330 species have been observed, including songbirds, waterfowl, owls and hawks. Composed of a diversity of habitats including hardwood forests, meadows, grasslands and cobble beaches, this 532-hectare NWA is part of the globally significant Prince Edward County South Shore Important Bird Area; used by researchers at the Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory’s Canadian Migration Monitoring Network Station to improve our understanding of bird migration and bird populations locally and globally; an important staging area for migrating bats; part of the International Network of Monarch Butterfly Reserves.

Harry Smith Conservation Area is a lovely spot for a picnic. The area includes a small pond, originally created to move logs into a log mill that was located on the property in the 1800s, near the outlet of the pond. Two picnic tables are located on the grounds, and area residents have planted flowers around a commemorative plaque. There are no maintained trails at this Conservation Area. A Little History This parcel of land was donated to the Prince Edward Region Conservation Authority in 1983 by Smith Quinte Enterprises of Belleville, and named in memory of Harry Smith. Perhaps the most historic mill in Prince Edward County was Roblin’s Mill, located in what is now the Harry Smith Conservation Area. Built in 1842, the grist mill was powered by water channeled from nearby Roblin Lake. In 1920 the mill ceased operation and stood vacant until the 1960s. The building was dismantled piece-by-piece and re-erected at Black Creek Pioneer Village in Toronto.

The Millennium Trail system serves as a County-wide recreational facility for local residents and visitors. It also provides access for farm vehicles by adjacent land owners. The trail corridor is eight feet in width and 46 kilometers in length and a total land area of 73.5 hectares. The trail starts in Carrying Place and winds through The County to Picton with various vistas and natural landscapes. The Millennium Trail is an important local off-road connection that links residents and communities along the entire 49 kilometer corridor length. Although, predominantly rural, the corridor passes through several urban areas that are characterized by adjacent residents, street crossings and connections to other walkway systems. The County acquired the abandoned rail line from the Canadian National Railway in 1997 for the purposes of developing a trail system through The County. The Trail is accessible at several locations throughout The County with specific hiking points in Picton, Wellington, Bloomfield and Consecon.

Our vineyard comprises of 5.5 acres planted to both Vitis Vinifera and French hybrids. TerraCello’s vines such as our Riesling and Cabernet Franc have been imported from Germany and France respectively. Our soil consists of heavy “hillier clay loam” over fragmented limestone bedrock with a high residual ph which makes it absolutely vital. Our vines are grafted onto lime tolerant rootstocks. Our soil depths range from 28 inches at the front of our estate to 36 inches in our “Vento” plot. All TerraCello’s vines have been hand planted by wonderful friends and family who volunteer their time every few years to break a sweat and enjoy being together with one another, and of course good food. Our rustic, Italian style patio offers a tranquil area nestled among our vineyard. Panoramic Northern views of the countryside in an unspoiled rural setting set the stage for our wood fired authentic Italian style pizza oven which we will be opening soon. Families can sit, relax and enjoy a glass of wine under the pergola, reminiscent of a Tuscan countryside. Visitors are welcome to traverse the grounds with their glass of wine in hand and wonder around, in a bucolic setting. Prince Edward County, as many say, “is the land that time has forgotten”. So come and visit us at TerraCello Winery in beautiful, sunny, Prince Edward County, Ontario.

We began planting in 1999 and now have 25,000 vines over 20 acres. There are 11,000 Pinot Noir, 9,000 Chardonnay, 3,000 Pinot Gris and 2,000 Gamay. The current yield, depending on the vintage, is about 3500 cases. All the wines are made using grapes only from our vineyards. In September the entire vineyard is netted against birds, and an electric fence surrounds the perimeter to keep out the raccoons. After harvest 2-3 canes are laid down on a low wire and dirt is hilled up on them for the winter to ensure a crop. With trial and error we have invented several tractor attachments to make this process as efficient as possible, including de-hilling in the spring. Harvesting begins as the weather dictates, anywhere from mid-September into October. All the processing is done on site in the barns across the road. The grapes are hand picked and sorted, then crushed and de-stemmed (by machine not feet). Pinot Gris and Chardonnay are left on their skins for 24 hours then pressed out, the Gris goes into stainless steel tanks and Chardonnay is barrel fermented using various ages of wood.

Authenticity is more important than trend and we believe where the grapes are grown matters. We also believe in the expression of terroir in wine. In Prince Edward County we observed our vineyards for three years and came to the conclusion in 2007 that we should make sparkling wine. Are you planning to visit the winery? Our tastings are $2.00 per sample of wine and we usually have 3 wines for $6.00 or 4 wines for $8.00 in our tasting room. We’re a small family-run farm and we want your experience here to be a memorable one! To maintain our level of service, we require groups of 6 or more to make a reservation. Stanners Vineyard is an artisanal, family-owned and operated winery located near the village of Hillier in Prince Edward County. Stanners Vineyard is a family venture that began in 2003 with the purchase of a parcel of farmland near the village of Hillier in Prince Edward County. We love Pinot Noir, making this quest a pleasure as well as a challenge. It is believed that the best Pinot Noir is made from grapes grown in the most northerly terroir that can actually produce and ripen the grape. Our winery was built in the summer of 2009, using the ecofriendly Straw Bale construction method for our barrel room, which offers excellent insulation for maintaining temperature equilibrium. Our farm consists of ten varieties on more than 35 acres of planted vineyard which maximize each zone’s potential and unique qualities. As a boutique producer, the wines are made in relatively small quantities, thereby allowing Terra’s winemaker to concentrate on creating wines of the finest hand-crafted quality. Our vineyard team is always up to date on the latest viticulture techniques. We harvest our grapes by hand, not by machine. We laboriously ‘bury’ our vines in the ‘terra’ to keep buds safe during the Winter and painstakingly dig them out in the Spring. We are all dedicated to ensuring the vines thrive year after year.

Harwood Estate Winery is a full-time solar-powered winery open year-round. We make about 3,000 cases of wine annually from our 20-acre vineyard, and will be at 5,000 cases soon. Since we began in 2007, we’ve won dozens of major national and international awards for our handcrafted wines, still made in the old-world tradition. We have also introduced three very popular new wine styles to the Canadian market. Our wines are available on-site, on-line, at Farmer’s Markets, in the LCBO and in many restaurants. We provide great entertainment for visiting families with kids, and we treat Designated Drivers to nonalcohol beverages. Our winery is chair, bike, bus and RV-friendly and we also offer electric car charging stations for our customers. In addition, we are one of the few wineries in Ontario that practice a 100% local employee policy. We hire, train, retrain and promote local people. This does not go un-noticed with our many tour partners, who comment repeatedly on how the experience at Harwood is second to none. Most of all, we make extremely good wine…in Ontario!

We are a small farm-gate winery, offering only wines produced from grapes we grow. We do not use synthetic herbicides or pesticides. Enjoy our handcrafted wines by the bottle or by the glass. Our patio overlooks the vineyard in the southeast corner of the County. We use no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, but rely on the arid climate of Prince Edward County and fractured limestone over Half Moon Bay to produce quality grapes. We process only the grapes we grow. Our mission is to produce premium Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Riesling and Merlot with minimal intervention, to allow the wine to express the local terroir.

We began planting our vineyards in 2000 and finally opened our tasting room in 2014. A yoga studio and beautiful vineyard loft were added in 2017. In this amazing journey, we’ve been lucky to have the support of family & friends, and made many new ones along the way. We produce affordable, easy drinking, everyday wines. Waupoos Estates Winery sits on a majestic 100acre water front property! The only winery that sits right beside Lake Ontario! Being at the water’s edge not only makes for beautiful scenery, but we also have a small dock for boaters to come and enjoy our estate! Our 20 acre vineyard has grown with new plantings of Shiraz grapes, Gewürztraminer grapes, and Gamay Noir grapes. We are anxiously awaiting the first harvest of these new plantings! Grapes aren’t the only thing we are growing – we have an apple and peach orchard, a modest citrus grove and a vast sugar bush, where we tap 1,500 maple trees to produce our own Maple Syrup.

Christian Morandin’s family comes from the Veneto region of Italy, where the tradition of winemaking has been passed down from one generation to the next. Our story is founded in our name. Sangreal Estate Vineyard is a family-owned vineyard and craft winery that produces small batch estate-grown & bottled wine in the traditional olde world style emphasizing vintage year and single varietals, while proudly expressing the unique terroir of single vineyards. The Old Third Vineyard is located on a steep south-south-east slope in Hillier, Prince Edward County. The soil, Hillier Clay Loam, overlays a friable Ordovician limestone bed about 450 million years old. Heavy and thin, it is mixed with an abundance of limestone gravel and fossils. The Old Third Vineyard contains an unusually large amount of glacial till in the form of granite, sandstone, quartz, marble dragged down by the last ice age from Northern Ontario. Our cathedral like barn, built in the 1860’s, was completely restored during the winter of 2006, to house the winery and tasting room. Our sparkling apple cider is made with the same level of attention and detail that goes into our pinot noir. The apples, non other than the noble golden russet, were sourced from a nearby apple orchard. They were hand sorted and the cider is méthod traditional, so the second ferment was in bottle. Like our sparkling pinot noir this cider is hand riddled, hand disgorged and topped with a natural cork.

The journey towards winemaking started when Charles and Mollie Lacey purchased property in Hillier, in 1982, as a summer retreat. Hillier is known to be one of the best areas for grape growing in the county. Its rich Hillier clay loam soil produces wines with profound tastes, textures and balance. In 2003 our family planted the first vines in the field: pinot gris, pinot noir, and chardonnay. As years progressed and our palates developed, so did the vineyard. Riesling, gewurztraminer, and baco noir vines were then planted. In 2009, Lacey Estates opened its retail store. We are a family owned and operated winery, located in the beautiful area of Prince Edward County. Visit us and enjoy a glass of wine on our porch, overlooking our newest vineyard.

Arts & Culture

Art is everywhere in The County. Walk the towns or take the back roads to discover modern galleries and rustic barn studios. Find art on walls, in gardens, at vineyards and everywhere in between; the places you visit will be as diverse as the artists themselves. Re-fuel your creative juices at workshops and live-demonstrations by talented makers working with paint, metal, glass, clay, fibre, cardboard, and even, beeswax. Soak up the arts scene along the Arts Trail and take a little (or big) piece of The County home with you. We’re also setting the stage for live theatre, performing art, local music and even ‘artisanal improv’ in rural Ontario. Grab a seat at the beach, in a barn, at the historic Regent Theatre – or you can even pull your car into our beloved drive-in. There’s no shortage of local and visiting talent springing up at concerts and performances all around The County, year-round.
