Great way to spend a few hours. Views are amazing and often you can see dolphins swimming and feeding offshore. Start your exploration by stopping in at the visitors center (on your right as soon as you enter the park), then stop and explore the various points all along the 5 mile drive. Some of our favorite viewpoints and small trails are: Turtle Mound (first small parking area on right after visitors center) - follow the path to a well maintained deck and observatory above the trees. El Dora State House (further down on the right) - follow El Dora Loop Road (go slow or you'll miss the signs) and park right behind the El Dora House. From here you can walk a few steps to a nice fishing dock. Keep your eyes peeled for manatees and dolphins (especially in the morning and late afternoon/dusk). Any of the beaches on the left side of Canaveral are absolutely stunning! Good to know ahead of time: there are only pit-toilets, no shower/rinse stations and, most importantly, the last beach (Parking lot 5) is a nude beach.

Excellent fishing and kayaking on this tidal lagoon and it's right in our backyard!

Ponce Inlet beach is a great spot to go for the day. There is the main beach where you can set up a spot to hang out while you watch the dozens of surfers (it's a well-known surf destination) and take strolls on the fishing pier. Keep your eyes peeled for marine life (like manatees, sea turtles, dolphins, large fish and even sharks, on occasion). But, there are also lots of little hidden spots along the boardwalk where you can have a private beach outing. Close to the parking lot you'll find clean, spacious bathrooms, outdoor showers, a pavilion with picnic tables and grilling areas. After entering the park entrance, take a right at the intersection and find a parking spot (instead of heading to the main parking area). Down this dead-end you can walk to some really pretty beach areas that overlook the inlet and have views of Disappearing Island.

Shopping

Dedicate at least one day to visiting Flagler Avenue for shopping and dining. You can pick up everything from souvenirs to handcrafted artisan-made pottery, art and more. Stop into one of the many restaurants for a bite to eat and stroll down the New Smyrna Beach at the end of the road. At the riverside of Flagler, you can catch amazing sunsets and watch dolphins playing near the bridge.

Canal Street (just over the north causeway bridge from our condo) is a great place to stop for some shopping and dining. On Saturday mornings there is a nice little farmers market with lots of local food vendors. The Canal Street area is the art district of New Smyrna Beach so here you'll find many local artisan shops and galleries and lots of events throughout the year. Check out the Canal Street Historic District calendar for upcoming events.

Food scene

(2 miles down the street) Open for brunch, lunch and dinner. All of their food is amazing. Our favorite time to visit is for lunch. They have a killer Corned Beef Reuben Sandwich or try their refreshing salads. And don't miss their homemade donuts and desserts! They can get pretty busy, so plan ahead and call in a reservation.

French bakery with good coffee and lots of fantastic pastries (if you like coconut and raspberry - try their version of a Snowball) - Take out only; no seating available.

Try sitting at the bar on the porch that overlooks the beach. The breeze that comes off the ocean is amazing! If you love a good burger you can't go wrong here!

Our favorite restaurant on Flager Ave! Everything on their menu is amazing, but some of our favs are the House Smoked Cajun Redfish Dip (soooo good!), Harmony Garden Hummus Platter, and Shrimp Gambas (if you like a little spice). Really you can't go wrong with any of their menu items and they do great brunches too. Their cocktails are fantastic!

Worth it! This is such a well-kept lighthouse and museum. For $6.95 (adult) $1.95 (child, 12 and under) you can climb the 175-foot lighthouse and walk around the top. The views are absolutely amazing. In addition to the lighthouse, there are several well-restored lighthouse staff buildings to explore on the grounds. Plan on 3-4 hours for a visit to this lighthouse and museum. And, don't miss the Lens Exhibit building for an up-close look at the lighthouse glass lenses! The museum offers guided tours, but we've always enjoyed exploring it on our own, at our own pace.
