Mostly restaurants of our choice and recommendations from our guests too. Not in any particular order.
Good food, carefully prepared and great sauces. Book early, almost always full. 30 mins walk, easy parking nearby. There is something rather old fashioned about the decor and ambience but the food is good and this place is a favourite with locals.

Great food prepared by the very friendly and welcoming chef Werner, a true Austrian who has been cooking for the folk of South Devon for almost 40 years. The Old Vienna is really popular with the locals. Good for couples and very popular with locals. Website is Old Vienna. Closed November 2023 to March 2024. However, they do offer takeaways during this period.

Visto Lounge is cheap and cheerful and we like it. Bistrot Pierre is good value but the service can be a bit dodgy - great views from their terrace.

Might be the best tearooms in town. You need to book or be prepared for a wait. It's on Babbacombe Downs so it can be a pleasant wait. We haven't had a chance to go since before the Pandenmic so we can't vouch personally but they have a good reputation still.

Great place for breakfast. Sit outside or inside or under the marquee. The views are superb and on a sunny day there is nowhere like it. Simple but well prepared food. Changed hands 2021 and we still haven’t been yet. Still a great location. Let us know if you go.

Possibly the best burgers ever. Quite trendy and you need to book. Friendly staff here and vegetarians are catered for in spite of the meatfest name and ghastly green cow over the front door. We really like eating here even though we are way above the average age group.

This shopping precinct has a great butcher (plus cheesmonger), wet fish shop and fish deli with some of the best fish pies and fish or shellfish quiches I have ever tasted. Happy Apple supermarket (odd and a bit ethnic but we love it), a good greengrocer and all you need. Plus free parking nearbye and a lovely friendly atmosphere pervades up here.

They deliver too but parking nearby is easy and there are lots of other great individual food shops up here.
D&H Fishmongers & Seafood Delicatessen

We never seem to get the chance to go in here but it is said to be really good! You must book in advance. Go down to the roundabout below us and then up Abbey Road which is opposite you. Just a few steps up there on the right hand side. 10 mins on foot perhaps. Looks scruffy outside but we are reliably informed that it is great food.

Rockfish - Torquay

Our other favourite Indian Restaurant has just opened up in Torwood Street and is 8-10 minutes on foot, maybe a little longer to get back. Parking nearby. It's big so although we generally advise you to make a booking, you will probably get in during the week. Closed on Mondays. Advisable to check their website although it's not quite ready yet (August 2023). One of our local top chefs reckons this is his favourite all-time Indian Restaurant and he knows his stuff. Highly recommended.

Very popular with locals and if you like Thai Food then this is one of our best. Online mapping beginning with a G shows it as 9 minutes walk but I would call that fast walking. Probably 15 minutes is more accurate and 20 minutes home. 5 minutes by are and there is some parking nearby in the evenings.
We like it here but we drive and there is easy evening parking. It's fairly new but well run with good food and a good understanding of the Italian kitchen. 7 minutes by car. Open all day. Location is in a pleasant shopping street and near to Kent's Cavern.

The big Torquay beach. Watch out for the tide as the beach disappears when it's high tide. The promenade along here is almost like being in the Med. Lots of cafes, cocktails and restaurants all with good views. It's a lively cafe area.

A small and eclectic museum but well worth a visit on a dull day. Of particular importance is the Agatha Christie exhibit. Agatha Christie's Holiday home is a National Trust house and gardens. An excellent visit. Theoretically you need to book if you go by car. You can also take a river boat fro Dartmouth up the River Dart. Check out the National Trust Website.

It's very popular with the local population and is one of our favourite spots and all our clients speak very highly of this area.

We all love Daddyhole, a lovely walk from the Harbour/Imperial Hotel along the coast or by road. Great place for a picnic, stroll or a walk down to Meadfoot. The views up here are spectacular. Limited parking on the Plain but more on the streets nearby. National Coastwatch have a watchtower and visit centre here which you can visit - small donations always appreciated because the Coastwatch is a charity not funded by Government and Don Hands is one of the Watchkeepers. You might find him in the tower in his uniform and this is us in the picture.

We haven't tried this yet but the Facebook postings make it look an amazing nature and wildlife trip around our local coastline. You have to book ahead and you need to go to Teignmouth (7 miles - lovely drive) to catch the boat. They run 1 and 2 hours trips mostly. Photos on their Facebook page are fantastic.

New Quay StreetWe haven't tried this yet but the Facebook postings make it look an amazing nature and wildlife trip around our local coastline. You have to book ahead and you need to go to Teignmouth (7 miles - lovely drive) to catch the boat. They run 1 and 2 hours trips mostly. Photos on their Facebook page are fantastic.
We haven't been, but could be a nice little visit if you are in the area.

Charming, quaint little seaside town just 6-7 miles drive along the coast from Torquay. Large car park at the top of the village and walk down. Also has a beach at The Ness - you walk through a tunnel through the cliffs to get there. A few good pubs and restaurants there. We like the Clipper.

Open carriages during Covid Times make this a great way to be able the see the scenery around Torbay. It's located just before the Princess Theatre on the sea-front in the direction of Paignton.

Everyone who visits this lovely and spacious zoo is delighted with their visit. Paignton is a leading research and medical zoo and shares intel with zoos around the world. Even if zoos aren't your thing, you might like this one.

I can't wait to go back.

Probably up to 40 minutes by car through some interesting countryside on a typically windy Dartmoor main road. Take it easy on the bends.

If you're thinking of going to the Motor Museum then give it a whirl because Moretonhampstead is a delightful small Dartmoor town with a lovely old fashioned feeling and, in my view, a rather special church. Probably up to 40 minutes by car through some interesting countryside on a typically windy Dartmoor main road. Take it easy on the bends.

However, great views on the way and it is on the Eastern edge of Dartmoor and a good lunch spot with a couple of rather nice shops and a splendid church. Very popular with tourists. Parking up at the Jubilee Hall. From here you can drive up on to Dartmoor very easily or visit Drogo Castle at Drewsteignton, Britain's youngest Castle and in the hands of the National Trust. Lots of good lunch places here.

Chagford
I think Chagford is very special. Probably about an hour by car but a lovely drive which you might find a bit windy. Out at Drewsteignton on Dartmoor this National Trust castle is a great place to visit and very popular with locals as well as our visitors. About one hour by car but well worth the time. Operated by the TOADS our excellent amateur dramatists. Visit their website for their list of plays and shows. The theatre itself is a marvel and is a converted church. Small bar and tearoom. We love it here.

The theatre is 10-20 minutes walk from the flats. 10 minutes on the way down if you walk briskly but 20 minutes to stagger back up our hill unless you are super fit. Taxis need to be booked in advance this summer.

Maybe a bit stony but easy to access and plenty of nearby parking. Meadfoot is known as the locals' beach and its true. Good for paddleboarders as well. Views are terrivic and breakfast a the Meadfoot Beach cafe is a must for us.
