Best Chinese by far in the area with outdoor seating on a lovely street in the summer. Cooks are usually Szechuan, so if you like your food spicy, you can get it. If you can communicate that you want your food more "authentic", they'll skip the somewhat gross starchy sauce they put on some dishes for Westerners.

An authentic Berlin pub, so a but rough around the edges. But full of 20 and 30 somethings after 10/11 PM. Live music on Thursdays, lots of people just having fun in an unpretentious atmosphere. Best - it's a half block away AND open 24 hours.

Gay bar with a Berlin twist. If you want a bit more hardcore, you can't beat it for close and sizzling on Tuesdays and Sundays. Thursday is also generally full. But crowds come after 12 midnight usually. If you don't know German, the name means "Fuck 3000" and you have to ring the bell to get in. One of two museums that I'll recommend. Of course the Pergammon and Egyptian museums, and others, are world class. But if you're into European painting from the Middle Ages through the 18th century, the Gemäldegalerie has a stunning collection that isn't too overwhelming. Strong points are Italian Renaissance, Dutch and Flemish, and German.

The food is sort of Jewish, sort of restaurant, but very solid. The main reason that I include it is because Knaackstrasse is lovely and leads you into the tangle of Prenzlauerberg's prettiest streets. Why would you eat Japanese in Berlin? I can't answer that question. But if you want to spend some extra money and are missing your Japanese, Shiori is a cut above. Omakase dining (you get what is freshest) and a good crowd. In Mitte with plenty to explore around the area. Reservations are a must - preferably several weeks in advance, as it's a small place with counter seats only.

Why would you want to eat Austrian food in Berlin? Because it's generally done well and tastes better than a Currywurst. Pricier, not over the top, with a relaxing space and quiet outdoor seating. Go for the huge but tender Wienerschnitzel (veal or pork) or my favorite, Tafelspitz (braised beef in two courses). For desert, absolutely save room for Kaiserschmarrn - an incomparable Austrian "pancake" - chopped up and served with powdered sugar and plum preserves.

I haven't been in years and years and years. But Roses never changes. It will definitely give you a taste of West Berlin before the Wall fell. In Germany, there's a difference between a pharmacy (Apotheke, with a big "A" out front) and a drugstore. The main drugstore chains are DM and Rossmann. Unquestionably the coolest Japanese entrant in my guide. I enjoy the food immensely and am a Japanophile purist who's been to the very best restaurants in Tokyo. Ryotei is inventive, definitely not inexpensive, and it infuses its dishes and atmosphere with a Berlin vibe. This nearby restaurant may not be to everyone's liking, so definitely check out the website before you go: https://www.herzundniere.berlin/1/index.html It is original with an admirable concept - when you kill animals, no part should be wasted. So expect lots of dishes with offal and organ meats. In some hands, those dishes could be unappealing. A 15-20 minute walk from my place a bit further down from the Turkish market that takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays. A nice selection of donuts in a cute place. One of the handful of nice places on this side of the canal - tends to be a 20 something hipster crowd. Area is often called "Kreuzkölln".
Beautiful breads and pastries and solid coffee. Less outdoor seating that some places along the canal, but indoor seating area is quite nice. One of the handful of nice places on this side of the canal - tends to be a 20 something hipster crowd. Area is often called "Kreuzkölln".

Good pizza with more upscale starters. Lots of expats/hipsters/students. Excellent location on a corner near a bridge over the canal. About 30 minutes walk from my place, so maybe the farthest you'll want. One of the handful of nice places on this side of the canal - tends to be a 20 something hipster crowd.
