When in Antwerp... Eat!

They advertise their food as heavenly pizzas and it's no lie. They are great! We Belgians like our beers too and this place makes pizzas ‘with the Duvel’ inside. Meaning they use Duvel brewer’s yeast as an ingredient in the pizza dough, what makes it super fluffy! Go there if you're looking for a tasty pizza and a nice interior!

This restaurant is located in a majestic building on the even more spectacular Graanmarkt. Young & old, businessmen and artists, shoppers and theatregoers… everyone feels at home here. They have their regular spot, they eat their favourite dish. Mine is the Belgian classic Vol-au-vent - a chicken stew in a creamy sauce - they serve the best of Antwerp. Traditionally it is served with fries, but I prefer it with potato croquettes. Another one is what we call Stoofvlees, it's a beef stew in a dark sauce flavoured with brown Belgian beer. Mix effortlessly with the locals & try to find a spot on their cosy terrace.

This small, authentic place is known for it's Belgian classic cuisine. I always have the Vol-au-vent or the Stoofvlees, you can't go wrong at this place. Even their mayonnaise is homemade and to die for! Be sure to make a reservation, because this place is always fully booked.

Not the most fancy interior, but cozy enough for a quick lunch or dinner. They have one or two vegan options and a small kids menu. I tried the Chicken Poké Bowl, with steamed rice and crispy veggies, which was super tasty and more then enough! My vegan friend had the Tofu Poké Bowl, which she also enjoyed. Located on the cosy square Dageraadplaats in walking distance from the flat - 15 minutes or so. Lots of eating options on the same square too and a small kids playground.

Our Belgian pride: fries! Happy to say you can find the BEST fries from town right around the corner @ De Frieterij. Hand cut fries and homemade sauces, this place is the place to be for a quality snack. Don't take the Stoofvlees though, although it is definitely homemade, it doesn't taste like it should the Belgian way. The owner is a Dutch guy, that explains! :-) Opening hours: Wednesdays: 16:30u - 22u Thursdays: 16:30u - 22u Fridays: 16:30u - 22u Saturdays: 16:30u - 22u Sundays: 16:30u - 22u

Don't leave Antwerp without having tried the famous Belgian Brussels waffles at this place. Crispy outside, soft & moist on the inside: don't put anything else on it except powdered sugar or whipped cream. Take it to go: it's much cheaper plus the area is nice to stroll around! Can't get enough of the Belgian sweets? Try the super delicious Smoutebollen - fried dough balls - or a Lacquemant - a thin waffle coated with caramelised sugar. Enjoy!

This ice-cream is the real deal. No artificial ingredients, only real fruit and lots of flavour! The owner even went to Italy to master the art of making the real Italian gelato. Go there! And have a drink on the terrace of Bar Leon while you're there.

A fenomenal building / museum. Don't spend your time visiting the museum, but instead take the escalator all the way up to the rooftop. You'll have amazing views of the historic center and the opposite side of the river, left bank with its port. Try to locate the cathedral, the central station and 'de Boerentoren'. Bonus: the escalator is free. Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 9.30 a.m. to 12 midnight (doors close at 11.30 p.m.)

A secret passage dating back from 1591 in the midst of the historic center! Walk through the gate at Oude Koornmarkt 16 and you'll feel as if you have journeyed back in time. In the past this alley was where the shoemakers and the poorest people in the city lived. The shoemakers were also in charge of sounding the alarm bell of the cathedral. These days you can find antiques stores and art galleries here as well as the exclusive restaurant Sir Anthony Van Dyck. This guy saved this hidden gem from extinction in the sixties when there where plans to demolish it and make it a parking! The atmosphere is very intimate which is why many people like to come here to listen to the carillon concerts during the summertime.

Did you know Antwerp is called the 'Koekestad', which literally means Cookiecity? This tiny little bakery is known for it's delicious handmade biscuits, in particular what we call 'Antwerpse handjes', a butter/almond cookie shaped in the form of a hand, a tradition that only a few certified bakers are entitled to. Our Antwerp Hands are one of the most known regional products from Antwerp. The name of these little treats refers to a folk tale about how the city got its name. According to legend, a giant called Druon Antigoon exacted a heavy toll from any seafarer crossing the river Schelde in Antwerp. If the sailors refused to pay, Antigoon mercilessly chopped off one of their hands. A brave Roman soldier called Silvius Brabo battled and killed the giant. He then chopped off the giant's hand and threw it in the Schelde. This is how the Dutch term 'hand werpen' (throw a hand) eventually became 'Antwerpen' (Antwerp). And why a hand became the symbol of the city. Tip: don't buy too many cookies, they don't come cheap..

Antwerp Zoo is considered one of the most beautiful- if not thé most - beautiful in Europe. It's also one of the oldest. The Zoo’s beautiful buildings and garden have been listed as monuments and when it was built in 1843, more than 150 years ago it was just outside of the city’s walls. Now – the city has grown so much that the ZOO is now in the middle of town and is a green oasis next to Central Station. Tickets aren't cheap, try to find a discount or deal online. Visits will take up half a day at least.

You’ll find Grote Markt, the old market square, right in the center of the old city district. Historic guildhalls line the edge of the square, flanking the impressive structure of Antwerp’s city hall. A statue of the mythical Roman soldier Silvius Brabo stands in the middle of it all, portrayed mid-throw as he tosses the severed hand of a slain giant. In the old legends, this is said to be how Antwerp got its name (hand werpen, or ‘hand throw’). The Grote Markt is a hub of architecture, history, and folklore, so be sure to stop by when you’re wandering through old city.

The oldest building in Antwerp, Het Steen is a small castle built in the early middle ages following Viking invasions into Belgium. This structure has worn many hats in its long history, from fortress to maritime museum. The castle currently is closed for renovations, but you'll have great views over the Schelde river. Go there if you're already near the Grote Markt, it's not far. Watch out for: the statue of the giant Lange Wapper

Just a stone’s throw from the Schelde river, St. Paul’s Church is a standout example of Gothic architecture, topped with an ornate Baroque tower. The interior is richly decorated in the Baroque style as well, with impressive columns, a leaf motif, and rare works of art by some of the most famous Flemish painters. While visiting St. Paul’s be sure to stop outside and admire The Calvary, a group sculpture consisting of 63 life-sized statues of angels, prophets, and other religious figures. Watch out for: the main altar. Opening hours: not sure, but generally you'll find the door open on weekends before lunchtime.
