I principali luoghi da visitare a Venezia - The main places to visit in Venice

ENGLISH - Let's start with a consideration: VENICE IS UNIQUE AND INIMITABLE. The city was for 1100 years the capital of the Serenissima Republic of Venice and is, together with its lagoon, considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. According to tradition, on 25 March 421, Venice was born. Built on 118 islands connected by 435 bridges and crossed by 176 canals and since its origins divided into 6 districts called "Sestieri": San Marco, San Polo, Dorsoduro, Cannaregio, Castello, Santa Croce. This first guide describes the main places to visit in Venice. We recommend a minimum of 3 stays to be able to see them all.
L’area è dedicata a Papa Giovanni XXIII. ENGLISH One of the most famous places in the world. It is the only square in Venice, all the others are called "Campi, Campielli or Corti". Also called "The drawing room of Europe" or "The living room of the Venetians", the most famous political or religious ceremonies were celebrated in this square. It is the lowest area of Venice, consequently the first to be flooded with water high. The square is made up of three areas: - the "Piazza" proper, the area is enclosed between the Procuratie (old, new and brand new), the Basilica of the same name and the Bell Tower. - the "Piazzetta San Marco" bounded by the access to the Marciana area for those coming from the sea through the columns of San Marco and San Teodoro, up to the Doge's Palace and the Library. It represented the gateway to the city from which one could access the two centers of power, the political one (Doge's Palace) and the religious one (St. Mark's Basilica). - the "Piazzetta dei Leoncini" located on the side of the Basilica and named for the presence of two crouching lions. The area is dedicated to Pope John XXIII.

ENGLISH Located in the square of the same name, it is the union between East and West, a symbol of Venetian art and Christianity. It offers a mix of Gothic, Byzantine and Italian Gothic architecture. The first church dedicated to San Marco and was built in 820 at the behest of the Doge Giustiniano Partecipazio next to the Doge's Palace to house the body of the Saint who, according to tradition, two Venetian merchants, Buono da Malamocco and Rustico da Torcello, had stolen from Alexandria of Egypt. In 832 it was consecrated with the proclamation of San Marco as Patron and Protector of the city, in place of the previous San Teodoro ("San Todaro" for the Venetians), honored in the East. In 1063 under the Doge Domenico Contarin it was demolished to make way for the current one, and built on the model of two churches in Constantinople, the Church of the Twelve Apostles and Santa Sofia. The Basilica was a State Church and did not depend on the Patriarch, who had his chair at the Church of San Pietro in the Castello Sestiere, the Doge himself appointed a ducal clergy led by the "Primicerio" (the first canon of the College of the Basilica and regent the private chapel of the Doge, the basilica, the Marcian and "Pievani" schools (the parish, from the Latin plebs, "people", was a religious and civil territorial district belonging to a rural church with a baptistery, called the mother church, parish . In the early Middle Ages it was reserved for the most important liturgical functions for the community and the churches and chapels without baptistery) connected to it depended on it, constituting a "nullius" diocese, that is not subject to the power of a metropolitan but dependent by the Doge). The administration of the Basilica was entrusted to an important magistracy of the Republic of Venice, the Procurators of San Marco, whose headquarters were the Procuratie. All the construction and restoration works were directed by the foreman (Engineer or Architect chosen by the Procurators for the technical direction of the works, among these the names of Jacopo Sansovino and Baldassare Longhena stand out). The Procurators of San Marco and Proto still exist and carry out the same tasks for the Patriarchate as in the past. Therefore from an ecclesiastical point of view the Marciana Church was represented by the Doge of Venice, who had the title of "Head of the Church of San Marco" and the prerogatives of Bishop, since ancient times, not appointed by the Pope and with the right to appoint the Bishops of the Dogado. The exterior is divided into three different registers: Lower floor, Terrace and Domes. Developed in width, since in a city like Venice resting on sandy ground the weight was more balanced. The main facade is made up of more than 400 elements and consists of two orders: the first on the ground floor marked by five large portals that lead to the "Narthex" (it is a space located between the naves and the main facade of the Church, and has the function of a short hall, as wide as the church itself); the second forms a walkable terrace with four blind arches plus a central one in which opens a loggia that houses the "Quadriga" (the four famous gilded bronze horses, which were raided by the Venetians, during the IV Crusade from the Hippodrome of Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire and placed above the central portal of the basilica). Of the many quadrigas that adorned the triumphal arches of antiquity, this is the only one left in the world. After the long restoration begun in 1977, the horses of San Marco are kept in the Museum of San Marco inside the Basilica, replaced on the balcony by copies. The interior of the Basilica is in the form of a Latin cross, with five domes distributed one in the center and one on each axis of the cross, connected by arches. The naves, three on each arm, are divided by colonnades that flow towards the massive pillars that support the domes; they are not built as a single block of masonry but articulated in turn like the main module: four supports at the top of a square, vaulted connecting sectors and a central part with a small dome. The main nave extends into the presbytery separated from each other by an iconostasis (it is a dividing wall decorated with icons), decorated with the statues of the twelve Apostles, a masterpiece of Gothic sculpture by Jacobello and Pier Paolo delle Masegne. In the presbytery stands the main altar and behind it the priceless Pala d'Oro, decorated with more than eighty enamels and hundreds of precious stones, once exhibited only on the occasion of major religious holidays. Under the altar, supported by four columns of alabaster and marble, rests the body of San Marco Among the furnishings of the Basilica, the "Ciborium" is the most visible and unnoticed. Supported by four columns completely covered with sculptures, it is adorned with beautiful slabs of green Thessalian marble. The mosaics that surround the Basilica externally and internally with their warm colors, especially gold, are spectacular, developing the theme of the "Glory of the Church". The visit to this monument is not only a precious opportunity for cultural study, but a real experience immersed in the beauty that nourishes the spirit.

ENGLISH The Clock Tower is also known as the "Torre dei Mori", built in 1499, in Renaissance Art, by Mario Colucci. It is one of the extraordinary beauties of Piazza San Marco, it stands on the mouth of the Antica Merceria, the commercial street of Venice of which it was the entrance door (now the shopping street of Venice). At the top of the Tower there is a terrace on which stands a bell, which is hammered every hour by two dark bronze figures: "The Moors". They are two shepherds, Il Moro bearuto is called the "old" and the Moro "young". The Moors mark the hours by striking the bell with their hammers (as many tolls as there are hours), but with a precise modality. The Moro Vecchio strikes the hour two minutes before the exact time, to represent the time that has passed, while the Moro Giovane strikes the hour two minutes later to represent the time to come. Going down with the gaze, you will notice the Winged Lion, the coat of arms of Venice and a semicircular terrace, from where at each "Festa della Sensa" for a week the Maggi kings parade preceded by an Angel. Below the terrace you can see the great Astronomical Clock of Piazza San Marco, in gold and blue enamel. Of extraordinary complexity is the system of astronomical indications, based on a geocentric system. The clock shows the passing of the seasons, the phases of the moon, the hours and the zodiac.

ENGLISH One of the most characteristic bridges in Venice. Built by Antonio Contin (grandson of Antonio da Ponte, builder of the Rialto Bridge) in 1602, it connects the Doge's Palace to the New Prisons. Designed suspended and completely closed to ensure maximum safety in the passage of inmates from prisons to the offices of the State Inquisitors. The name derives because tradition has it that the prisoners, at the time of the Serenissima Republic, sighed while crossing it in front of the prospect of seeing the outside world for the last time. The old prisons were terrible, they were called "lead" because in direct contact with the roof built with lead (imagine how the temperature inside the prisons could be in summer). Today, however, it is considered one of the most romantic places in Venice, which is why it is also called the Bridge of Love or the Bridge of Lovers. It is clearly visible from Ponte della Canonica and Ponte di Paglia, two points from which it can be photographed perfectly.

ENGLISH The oldest and most famous of the four bridges on the Grand Canal. It was initially designed and built to join the two banks of the Grand Canal with a pontoon bridge. Later in 1264 it was rebuilt on stilts entirely in wood by Nicolò Barattieri. The considerable maintenance costs of the wooden bridge forced the Republic to issue a tender in 1554 to replace it with a stone one. The most famous architects of the time participated in the tender, including Michelangelo, Palladio s Sansovino. After several disputes, the project was assigned to the Venetian engineer Antonio da Ponte. The work, which everyone still admires today, was completed in 1591. The structure houses 24 "Shops" distributed on both sides of the bridge, there are three ramps for ascent and descent, a central 10m wide with large steps divided into groups of five and two side ramps about 3m wide. Since then, the bridge has never had problems with statics and the only works carried out are maintenance of the marble cladding.

ENGLISH The second bridge built in the Grand Canal. It was designed and built during the period of Austrian rule by the engineer Alfred Neville and opened to the public with a toll in 1854, due to the need for further crossings in the Grand Canal. The bridge was made of iron in a single girder and a span of 50m, to allow the transit of boats, all lined with trees at the time. It was initially called Ponte della Carità deriving from the nearby Charity complex, which included the Convent, the Church of Santa Maria della Carità and the Scuola Grande della Carità (these buildings, deconsecrated and disused, later became the seat of the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and currently they house the Gallerie dell'Accademia). The structure already showed signs of subsidence after a few years due to design errors of the foundations. It was completely rebuilt in wood in 1933 by the engineer Eugenio Miozzi and had to be provisional while waiting for it to be rebuilt in stone, it was never replaced. Only in 1986, after continuous and costly maintenance interventions, was it decided to insert iron reinforcements to strengthen the entire structure. In 2009 the Municipality of Venice launched a tender, totally financed by a donation, for the total replacement of the wooden parts with other materials and the sandblasting and painting of the metal parts. The works ended in 2018. The bridge connects the Church of San Vidal with the Accademia Galleries and is the first bridge you come across along the Grand Canal from San Marco.

ENGLISH The fourth and last bridge, in order of construction, of the Grand Canal. Finished, after several years of design and construction, in 2008 and connects Piazzale Roma, the Venice car terminal, with the Santa Lucia railway station. It is a very modern work, created by the architect Calatrava (also called "Ponte di Calatrava") in a single span of 81m and 6m wide at the ends and 9m in the center. The structure is made of steel while the steps and parapet are made of glass and white Istrian stone. A bridge surrounded by many controversies, due both to the method of use of the materials (glass steps), and to the architectural impact with the City of Venice (too modern work) and to the high cost of construction ( approximately 12.5 million euros, of which 2 million only for the gondola lift for the disabled that never came into operation and has now been removed). The name in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Italian Constitution.

In the immediate vicinity there is "the stone of the ban", where the laws and decisions that the state took, especially the death sentences, were loudly announced, by accessing a small staircase supported by a sculpture of a bent man, for this reason renamed by the Venetians "Gobbo di Rialto". The market is the heart of the Venetian people.

ENGLISH Simply called "La Salute", it was built by Baldassare Longhena in 1687 to thank the Madonna, like the Basilica of the Redeemer, for having put an end to one of the worst epidemics of plague that caused 80,000 deaths in Venice and 600,000 throughout the Serenissima Republic. between 1630 and 1631. Since then, every year on November 21 is celebrated, and has a great value for the Venetian people, a spectacular festival, the "Feast of the Madonna della Salute", where a floating bridge is also prepared for centuries made of boats, which connects the Basilica, built in the Punta della Dogana area at the end of the Grand Canal and near the San Marco Basin, to the San Marco shore. The Basilica has an octagonal plan completely covered with Istrian stone, crowned by two domes and flanked by two bell towers. The interior is nothing short of spectacular, six chapels are grafted around the central space covered by a high dome supported by eight huge pillars decorated with eight sculptures. On the eight sides of the Basilica there are the main entrance door, three altars on the right (of the Nativity, of the Assumption and of the presentation of the Virgin in the Temple), three altars on the left (of the Descent, of Sant'Antonio and of the Annunciation di Maria) and the main altar in front of the entrance where an imposing sculpture of a Madonna with a child in her arms develops to represent the Salute that defends Venice from the plague.

ENGLISH The Church is located near San Marco and the Doge's Palace in the Castello district in the center of Venice. It was built in the 9th century to house the remains of San Zaccaria, father of San Giovanni Battista, donated to Venice by the Byzantine Emperor Leo V the Armenian to strengthen friendship. A monastery of Benedictine nuns was added to the structure by the Doges Angelo and Giustiniano Partecipazio. In 1105 a terrible fire completely destroyed both the Church and the Monastery and it is said that more than 100 nuns who took refuge in the basement to escape the fire (still existing under the High Altar) died. Shortly thereafter, the church was completely rebuilt and in 1458, thanks to the architect Mauro Codussi, it took on its Renaissance appearance that we can still admire today. The history of the sanctuary is linked to the Middle Ages above all for two important political and religious events: the first, in 855 Pope Benedict III took refuge at the Monastery of the Benedictine nuns to escape the violence unleashed by the antipope Anastasio and for gratitude the Pope donated many relics to the Benedictines which became the pride of the Monastery; the second, the Doge used to go to visit the nuns on Easter day as a sign of gratitude for having given him the land where the Ducal Chapel was built and on the occasion he presented, exceptionally, to the Abbess the majestic Ducal Horn, symbol of his power and used only for coronations. The Church has three naves with cross vaults, the most famous facade in white Istrian stone is divided into three parts by a series of coupled columns and opened by numerous windows and above it overlooks the statue of San Zaccaria. Inside there are the burials of many Doges and works of considerable value such as the "Pala di San Zaccaria" by Giovanni Bellini.

ENGLISH The Arsenale of Venice is an ancient complex of shipyards and workshops, where the ships of the Serenissima were built. It was the heart of the Venetian naval industry, a seafaring power that for centuries was among the most powerful in the world. Located in the north-eastern part of the city, it occupies almost 15% of the territory, up to almost 15,000 people (Arsenalotti) worked inside it in moments of full production activity. The term "Arsenale" derives from the Arabic daras-sina'ah "house of industry", then passed to the Venetian Darzanà and with the passage of time in Arzanàl and Arsenal, hence the Arsenal. Darzanà, on the other hand, has gone on to indicate the current term of the Darsena, that is, the bodies of water inside the Arsenale. In the 11th century it was designed near Piazza San Marco and then moved to the Castello district between the areas of San Pietro di Castello and the Parish of San Giovanni in Bragora, due to the availability of a large aquatic area near the San Marco basin (lake of the monastery of San Daniele) and because nearby was the arrival point of the rafts that from the Cadore and Montello woods, using the spring waters of the Piave river, transported the necessary timber to Venice. The location in this area greatly affected the development of the city, in fact, the "public houses" were built around the walls of the Arsenal to have the staff available as quickly as possible. Carpenters, blacksmiths, rope-makers, saw-makers and nautical architects made the Arsenale famous in the world by creating those "Galleys" (a type of warship and trading ship driven completely by the strength of the oars and sometimes by the wind, thanks also to the presence of masts and sails ) and the large "Galeazze" (it is a type of galley exclusively for warfare, built from the 15th century and used mainly in the Mediterranean Sea from the 16th century. It differed in its larger size, the large number of artillery and the possibility of carrying out the lateral shot. The ratio between length and width was 6 to 1 or 5 to 1. These ships, used for the first time by the Venetians of Sebastiano Venier in the battle of Lepanto, represented a sort of hybrid between the galley and the galleon and were considered for several years a fundamental unit in the most powerful fleets) which made the Mediterranean a familiar sea to Venetian sailors. In the fourteenth century the production capacity had practically tripled and the "Land Gate of the Venice Arsenal" was built, the first example of Renaissance architecture in the city. A “new” and even a “brand new” department was built to further speed up productivity, increasingly efficient and similar to an assembly line, and to counter the Turkish threat of the 15th century. Thanks to its organization, the arsenal of Venice anticipated the modern concept of factory by a few centuries, intended as a production complex in which specialized workers carry out the individual assembly operations of an artifact in succession, along an assembly line and using standard components. . It represents the most important example of a large production complex with a centralized structure of the pre-industrial economy. “In the MCIV, when the Venetian arms of glory greedy and conquering the Lydians of Syria, this Arsenal had its beginning”. This plaque is still found today in the citadel of the Arsenale.
