Eating Out in Bedar

It is about 20 minutes to walk into Bédar from Casa La Era. If you don’t fancy walking both ways, drive into town and then walk home. You can always collect the car in the morning.
To get the best views go at lunchtime. It can get busy so it may be best to book. The food is excellent and do not miss trying the lamb speciality. (One lamb and a patatas a lo pobre is sufficient for 3 people – or ask for a doggy bag as it is also delicious cold)

Golf courses

This is the nearest course to the villa. Like the other courses it is kept in good condition and there are definitely some challenging holes.

Karting Garrucha is just off the A-370 (on the left as you are driving to Garrucha, past the Turre and Mojacar turnoffs). We haven’t tried it but it looks good and claims to have 60 karts and a 560m track.

Local Towns

We fell in love with Bédar before we found Casa La Era. The maze of twisty streets and whitewashed buildings is typically Spanish and it feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Mojacar. The recommended way to visit and fully appreciate Bédar village is on foot. The first port of call just has to be the Mirador and Plaza de San Gregorio, also known by the name Balcon de Levante, this viewing terrace presents outstanding vistas down to the coast and a hint to the village history in the form of the monument of the mine worker. The statue was inaugurated by the Honourable Mayor Don Angel Collado Fernandez in Sept 2005 in memory of the mine workers of Bédar. Carved by Roberto Bolea Martinez using local marble from Macael in the Valle de Almanzora, the sculptor also engraved a turtle on the back of the monument, representing the Tortuga Boba, an important species in the area. An information board and village map is situated in front of the plaza, it provides route options for exploring, a paper copy can also be obtained from the village town hall, which is pinpointed on the map. Places of interest include the restored Fuente Temprana natural spring water fountain along with the Lavadero public wash house (both of which are detailed in the Routa del Agua Bédar walking trail), and the Bédar chapel of La Ermita de la Virgen de la Cabeza which can be found in the Plaza de la Ermita. The parish church Iglesia Santa Maria de la Cabeza can be spotted above the village house rooftops, it is located in the Plaza Santa Maria, inside the church there are two oil paintings, one of San Gregorio and the other of the Virgen de la Cabeza, both being the patron saints of the pueblo.

A beautiful village on the hillside full of lovely little winding cobbled streets leading away from the main square – don’t think it is possible to get lost. Well worth strolling around so that you’ll get to know it and find all the little bars and restaurants. Like most towns it has a weekly market, every Wednesday morning, and there is also a flea market every Sunday at the bottom of the village (near the junction for the Turré road). If you have the energy, go up to the very top of the village (take a left at main square by the post box and keep walking up). There is a bar (El Castillo) at the top which is often closed but should be open during the high season. The view is magnificent – if you have binoculars, bring them.

The sea front extends for miles with great sandy beaches and many, many restaurants, coffee shops and bars. It does get quite busy in peak season but there are numerous lovely little roads off the beach to stroll up and wander around with many typical Spanish villas and gardens, with the mountains in the background. The promenade in Mojacar Playa has been extended and now extends from the Hotel Indalo at the South end of the beach to the Pueblo Indalo. It is a fabulous amenity for walking or running, again with many opportunities for a coffee or beer stop.

There is a great coastal drive from Mojacar to Carboneras with windy roads and sheer drops etc but beautiful scenery. Not for the nervous driver, but well worth the trip. If you wish to continue along the coast drive through Carboneras past the cement factory and you’ll arrive in Agua Amarga. It is a scenic drive to a pretty little village with a lovely beach. Probably not worth the bother in August as I’m told it gets totally packed and parking, getting food, etc is supposed to be impossible. Nonetheless, it is fabulous.

The town is a typical Spanish town, the largest in the area, and worthy of a visit to explore the old centre. Also, take time to explore the castle, which is outside town and well worth a visit. Audio guides in English are available and included in the admission price.

Supermarkets

There are two minimarkets and a bakers in Bedar so for larger shops you will need to travel a bit further. There is a map in the black folder of supermarkets in Vera. The biggest supermarkets are Mercadona, Lidl and Dia.
