One of the favorite landmarks in Mombasa with visitors is the centrally located gigantic elephant tusks (Pembe za ndovu ). You really can’t say you’ve been to Mombasa until you’ve seen these, whether by foot or as you drive past. Unlike other sights, this wonderful landmark is entirely free for you to visit, take photographs of and enjoy. I would recommend that you definitely take a trip down Moi Avenue to take a snap of these incredible elephant tusks during your trip to Kenya’s second largest city The elephant tusks were initially made of canvas stretching over wooden frames on Kilindini Road but were later re-built out of aluminium and stand strong on Moi Avenue. These tusks are famous because of their history and the many things that they symbolize and represent. They were initially commissioned to commemorate the visit of Princess Margaret (Queen Elizabeth’s sister) in 1956, when Kenya was still part of the British Empire. Looked at from the correct angle, the four elephant tusks make the letter, “M” and represent the name of the city, “Mombasa”. These elephant tusks are so famous that U.S. Marines often volunteered to paint the tusks whenever they arrived to the city of Mombasa. The author Jennifer Richard Jacobson once said, “Elephants love reunions. They recognize one another after years and years of separation and greet each other with wild, boisterous joy. There’s bellowing and trumpeting, ear flapping and rubbing. Trunks entwine.” locals and tourists often flock to see these wonderful tusks to reminisce about their experiences together and create new ones

Mama Ngina Waterfront Park, which has benefited from the big chunk of renovation millions, holds the rich history of Mombasa town that dates back to the 15th century.Among the features the project established are leisure walks, souvenir shopping, entertainment, sporting and other leisure activities, foods and beverages, and relaxation areas. According to information at the National Museum of Kenya, Mama Ngina Watefront Park is as old as Fort Jesus. The fight for Mombasa Island (Mvita) is believed to have taken place on this site, before the natives (Wakilindini) moved northwards to Old Town and Majengo area. The battle of Mombasa was between the Portuguese and the natives, who were against the slave trade that was being done by the Arabs then. Hundreds of thousands of the Swahili natives (Wakilindini) lost their lives on these grounds of Mama Ngina, when they were bombarded by the Portuguese from their canons in the ships. Some Swahili natives still call Mama Ngina site Mizimule (A place of spirits/ghosts) because of the lives lost on that site and the presence of the many baobab trees. It is believed that the Wakilindiini might have been driven out by the Portuguese in the 15th century, as supported by the presence of St Joseph Fortress, a nameless fortress, a Portuguese Redoubt at the Mama Ngina site,” the ruins of a church, St Johns ACK, believed to be the first one in Mombasa built by the Portuguese, are still standing on a cliff at Mama Ngina Waterfront Park behind the police headquarters. A fortress named St Joseph and another unnamed Portuguese redoubt still stand after four centuries. This old St Joseph Fort at Mama Ngina was later abandoned before the Portuguese set a new base near the Old Town. This is after they built Fort Jesus between 1593 and 1596 to the designs of Giovanni Battista Cairati to protect the old port of Mombasa. Just a short distance from Mombasa Golf Club is the Mombasa State House, which was built in 1879 as the Government House, some eight years before the construction of Nairobi State House in 1907.

Food scene

Moorings floating restaurant is one of its kind in East Africa. It has a capacity for 200 people. Local and foreign tourists often throng the restaurant particularly during holidays. Guests here have the opportunity to feast on expertly made seafood that includes fish, lobster, crab and prawns. The floating restaurant is extraordinary. During high tide, seawater splashes on the sides of the wooden floors and makes it sway. While for first-timers this may be a scary experience, there is nothing to worry about as the restaurant is firmly tethered to strong poles. For visitors afraid of the sea and boat rides, the restaurant is a safe bet. Transportation to and from the venue is safer using Uber , Bolt or little cab especially if you will be out late . It is about 30-45 min drive from our location. For those adventurous enough to enjoy a boat ride, the Pomboo dhow, which has been modified with comfortable seats, takes off at 5pm and sails through the creek, covering six kilometres to allow passengers enjoy the sunset and, if lucky, see saltwater crocodiles. It is a good place if you want to spoil yourself and have the time to spend a lazy afternoon /Evening. They have days for karaoke and live bands .
