Sarzana is a beautiful medieval town about 30 minutes from our house. The ancient center is closed to all local traffic, making it a delightful place to stroll through narrow cobbled streets full of small boutiques, outdoor cafes, and little restaurants tucked down alleyways. There is a cafe serving homemade (artisanale) ice cream. You can also take a walk along the top of the old town wall and the main gate which affords great views of the castle on the hill above and the narrow streets of the town below. Sarzana (whose name in the Middle Ages was Castrum Sarzana) has ancient origins The town has two castles, the fortress Firmafede, Pisan and the Sarzanello fortress, old Episcopal residence. Today the walled sixteenth century village is almost intact, with walls and four towers. There are many events, exhibitions, presentations, initiatives. The big summer event, is ” La Soffitta nella Strada ”, an exhibition of antique objects for collectors, fine crafts. Around Sarzana you can visit the archaeological excavations of Luni, an ancient Roman port, of which remains still an amphitheatre and several remnants. For those who like hiking, there are many paths that wind in Montemarcello Magra and River Park, where you can see different species of birds, fish, amphibians, terrestrial animals, so generous and varied flora and fauna.

Massaciuccoli: the name appears to have Roman origins, if not further back to the Etruscans. In either, case it is a clear demonstration that this area has been populated for a very long time. he Wildlife Oasis is situated within walking distance of the Roman villa which remains in excellent condition and makes for a unique hike. The boardwalk extends over the edge of the lake, the 2nd largest in Tuscany and offers an excellent opportunity to explore the large bird population and distinctive flora that exist in these shallow waters. After touring this area definitely have a peek at the Roman ruins from the I sec. d.C. which were brought to life in the mid-1700’s. Little by little, different areas of the mansion have been cleaned up including an impressive structure highlighting the thermal bath of this Roman villa and beautiful mosaic floors. This villa sat on the road leading to Rome, one that was later used by the pilgrims as they made their trek to see the Pope. These ruins represent very real evidence of the interest by the Roman nobles in cultivating and settling in these lands.

Lucca where art, culture, entertainment and shopping combine harmoniously. Lucca is one of the beautiful cities in the Tuscany region, the perfect destination for a day trip from our property. The town has a lot to offer for curious travelers in search of beautiful scenic locations with a lot of history, architectural beauty and unique culture. Most of the attractions in Lucca today show its ancient history: from the trace of the Roman amphiteater that can be seen in the shape of the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro to the archeological remains under the 12th century church of Saints Giovanni and Reparata (the first city cathedral, located just around the corner from the present-day cathedral of San Martino), to the various towers and villas from the 12th to 16th centuries. Unusual for cities in the region, the walls around the old town were retained intact as the city expanded and modernized. As the wide walls lost their military importance, they became a pedestrian promenade ringing the old town although they were used for a number of years in the 20th century for racing cars. They are still fully intact today; each of the four principal sides is lined with a different tree species. For anyone who wants to see the city from a different perspective it’s possible to go up on the walls and walk on them as a pedestrian promenade or on a bike offering a marvelous view of the city and its surrounding landscape.

Barga is a beautiful old, walled town in northern Tuscany Standing on a wooded hill above the valley of the Serchio River, the walled settlement with its twisting flagged streets and grand palazzi is a time capsule of centuries-ago Italy. Stunning views, beautiful church (cathedral) with an exquisite history. It stands over Barga like a great protector. In July there takes place the festival of Barga Jazz, where local musicians perform in the open air in the evenings, and you can eat you meal al fresco to a musical accompaniment. The town has always attracted artists and writers, such as the great poet Giovanni Pascoli who made the town his home a century ago, and died there, in what he called "the land of the beautiful and the good." You can sit on the balcony at the Caffe Capretz, one of his favourite spots, and look over the flowers on the railings at the Apuane mountains. The composer Puccini was a friend of Pascoli and a regular vistor to Barga and a whole host of painters known as the Pascoli Generation found inspiration in the town, such as Cordati, Magri and Santini.

The origins of the walled suburb of Fileto date back to the Byzantine defense against the Longobards, in the VI and VII centuries. The defensive system, the "limes" was based on the castra of Filetto and Filattiera. Indeed they have the same name origin: from the Greek term "filakterion", strengthened place. Filetto made part from the 1351 of the feud of Malgrate, in 1641 was sold to the Camera Reale of Milan and then to the Ariberti of Cremona. Through two monumental doors we enter the suburb. The Piazza di Sopra has a quadrilateral shape and was defended by four cylindrical towers, one of then still up. The first nucleus was then transformed into a strengthened residence with repeated interventions till the XVII century. In the other square rise the church of Saints Filippo and Giacomo and the Marquises Ariberti's Palace, an imponent seventeenth-century building connected to the suburb and the church by two elegant aerial passagges. On the other side of the square it is situated the Convent of the Frati Ospitalieri, a vast complex of the XVII century, with a beautiful inside cloister partly destroyed and rehandled. Just outside the southern door, we find the oratory of St. Genesio of the XVI century, in the mysterious wood of Filetto, where has been recovered numerous statue-stele. In August, Fileto host the Medieval Market, when the suburb goes back to the past with medieval decorations, jugglers, minstrels, acrobats and objects of the local craftsmanship in iron, wood and stone.

Castelnuovo Magra In a dominant position in the plain of the river Magra, Castelnuovo Magra is an ancient town situated at the peak of a hill, which enjoys splendid views over the Gulf of Poets. Mentioned for the first time between 1187 and 1203 in the Pelavicino Code, Castelnuovo is rich in history and art. The imposing facade of the Renaissance "Oratorio dei Bianchi" mark the entrance of the town. Nearby is the Renaissance church of St. Mary Magdalene, with the interior sculptures in Carrara marble. It was built in the XII century by Bishop Gualtiero to control the Via Francigena, finally carried out by Enrico of Fucecchio. Today it is still impressive, with ruins of the walls and a rectangular tower of 80 meters. On October 6, 1306 hosted Dante Alighieri as a prosecutor of Francesco Malaspina of Mulazzo, to seal peace with the bishop of Luni, Antonio Nuvolone of Camilla. In the narrow streets rise palaces of the XVII-XVIII century: "Palazzo Ingolotti Cornelius", "Palazzo Tonarelli" and "Palazzo Natolini Ferrari".

During your stay in Lunigiana region you can visiting the "Stele Museum" and the "Piagnaro Castle" in Pontremoli. The Piagnaro castle dominates the town from its hill near the main piazza. It was built to control access to several important passes over the Apennines, and now it controls the icons of Lunigiana - the stele statues. To reach the castle you must climb up, true, but it's through the evocative Piagnaro neighborhood, the original center of Pontremoli. This jumble of stone buildings and narrow lanes suggests a photo at every turn. It doesn't matter which lane you take, just go up already - the views from the castle will make the climb worthwhile. Most of the castle is now the Museum of the Stele Statues. Stele are the indigenous stone statues of Lunigiana- the oldest date back 5,000 years and are evidence of a prehistoric people who fashioned the hard local sandstone into mysterious warriors and figures with feminine traits. The characteristic arched-top sculptures, carved with rough facial features, are the symbol of Lunigiana. No one knows whether the meanings of the stele were religious or territorial or social or all of the above. The Museum intrigues the visitor with the origin question, factually and visually, and adds cultural ambiance to this rocky inheritance. It's a fascinating visit, and English speakers will benefit from renting the audio guide.
