My favorite restaurant in the Highlands (don't tell the other restaurants). Excellent food, friendly staff, and a 30-minute, scenic drive from my door - worth the trip. Again, get the Rusty Salad and fish cakes - so good.

Rusty Anchor Restaurant

The iconic Keltic Lodge offers a couple of restaurants. The Sitting Room is a more informal scene with lots of good food and comfortable seating - great patio, too. The Atlantic Restaurant offers more of a traditional restaurant approach, with great dining and scenery. Also, the Keltic often has local musicians plying their trade. Located in the Sitting Room, though may have migrated to the Atlantic Restaurant, either is a great spot for hearing talented musicians and a little Cape Breton folklore. Watch for Cyril McPhee and/or Rob MacLean - talented lads.

Love Andrew's Pizza. Andrew is always on site and his staff are great. Great menu, serving more than just pizza. Bonus? Andrew's Pizza shop is a one minute walk from my door. Grab a slice and head to the beach - why not?

Doucette's offers a little of everything. It's a typical corner store with a friendly staff, but also offers a takeout menu and a small dining area (new this year - looks good!). Also, downstairs from Doucette's is a great candy store that kids (and kids at heart) will love, it's full of old school, classic candy and offers smoothies and ice cream, too. Great spot, top to bottom.

The Cape Breton Highland Links was just ranked 5th in Canada, coast-to-coast. The seventh hole of the course is a five minute walk from my back door, the recently renovated clubhouse is a five minute drive. Golfer paradise.

Simply, this is my favorite spot on planet earth. Need I say more?
Beautiful hike through the Clyburn Valley. Follow the Clyburn Brook back through the mountains and, if you're lucky, you might spot some gold in the brook as you approach an abandoned gold mine. Might, I can't stress that enough, might find some gold. Either way, you'll enjoy the hike!

Skyline Trail is about a 45 minute drive from my place - toward Cheticamp. Incredible views, lots of wildlife to be seen, and an accessible hike for most everyone. Great spot. Cheticamp is about another 15 minutes around the Trail from the Skyline Trail, but offers restaurants, pubs, and various shops to entertain wandering travelers. Love Cheticamp.

Cheticamp is about another 15 minutes around the Trail from the Skyline Trail, but offers restaurants, pubs, and various shops to entertain wandering travelers. Love Cheticamp.
Located halfway down the road to Warren Lake (8.8km north of my place), the Broad Cove Mountain hike offers great views of Warren Lake and surrounding Broad Cove area. Inclines on this hike (it is a mountain, after all), but nothing a moderately fit fellow human can't handle.

The good ol' Co-op - old school style. Great spot to gather some groceries and listen-in on the hilarious conversations of the locals. Be prepared to laugh. Great staff and patrons. Co-op is 15 minutes north of my place - take the Neil's Harbour turnoff (just past the hospital on the right) and keep driving until you see the Co-op (on your right). There's only one road through Neil's Harbour, it's impossible to miss the Co-op.
