A mannequin in traditional Albanian dress will greet you with a stony smile as you enter this tourist favourite. The pantomime continues inside and the restaurant is stuffed with traditional crafts, and while its popularity with travellers means you won't feel like you've discovered a truly authentic slice of the country, the delicious menu makes it well worth a visit.

One of the great classics of Tirana dining. This tiny place which consists of nothing but a small smoky grill, does one thing and one thing only – qofte (rissoles) – and the same woman and her family have been making them to exactly the same recipe since 1957.

Come here to witness Tirana's ebullient street life. Every day from dawn, traders come here to hawk fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, and whether you're actually looking to buy anything yourself or not, it's a wonderful place to stroll and soak up the atmosphere. Recently given a massive facelift, the market is known as the New Market but is actually one of the oldest parts of the city. Some superb cheap restaurants ring the main market.

This local institution serves traditional Albanian and Italian fare in the heart of Blloku. The inventive menu includes oven-baked veal and eggs, stuffed aubergine, pizza, and pilau with chicken and pine nuts. Be warned: it's sometimes quite hard to get a seat, as it's fearsomely popular, so you may have to wait.

Around the corner from the chic cafes of the Blloku neighbourhood, chef Bledar Kola’s Albanian food metamorphosis is hidden behind a row of grain mills and a wall of corn husks. The restaurant is one of the pioneers of Albania’s slow-food movement and it's also a place of culinary theatre, with dishes served in treasure chests or atop teapots.

A super popular seafood and sushi restaurant merged with a lounge bar that attracts all of Tirana's beautiful people. Service is on the mark and the food, which is genuinely decent, is presented with an artistic flair. The house special is the all-out seafood tower, which mixes oysters, lobster, mussels and salmon among other salty delights.

With its lace window-curtains and tubs of flowering plants, this might look like a simple French bistrot and indeed, the food leans heavily on Gallic cuisine. But a meal here reveals a refined operation, as attentive waiters talk you through the daily menu of artfully executed seasonal dishes, typically including seafood options and some fabulous starters. There's also one of the best wine cellars in Tirana, with a wide selection of French, Italian and some good Albanian bottles. Limited tables: it's wise to book ahead.

Sightseeing

Sheshi Skënderbej is the best place to start witnessing Tirana's daily goings-on. Until it was pulled down by an angry mob in 1991, a 10m-high bronze statue of Enver Hoxha stood here, watching over a mainly car-free square. Now only the equestrian statue of Skanderbeg remains, and the 'square' – once Tirana's most popular meeting point in the decades where 99% of people were forced to get around on foot – is now a huge traffic roundabout. Early evening is a particularly nice time to come here. Buskers strum a few tunes and vendors sell popcorn and balloons as the locals stroll and chat.

Parks & Nature

Just 25km east of Tirana is Mt Dajti National Park. It is the most accessible mountain in the country, and many locals go there to escape the city rush and have a spit-roast lamb lunch. A sky-high, Austrian-made cable car, Dajti Express, takes 15 minutes to make the scenic trip (almost) to the top (1611m). The area surrounding the upper cable-car station is a bit anticlimactic. There are some 'family-friendly' activities such as shooting things with toy machine guns and hitting things with swords, or you can ride about a patch of rubbish-strewn wasteland on a pony. Get past this lot and some abandoned buildings haunted by stray dogs, and things improve immeasurably. The mountainside is covered in lovely, shady beech and pine forests and a number of walking trails wend up and down the mountain. There are some very hit-and-miss trail markings, so it's wise to try and find a guide. Many of the hostels in town can arrange a day's hiking or mountainbiking up here. If you just want to enjoy the view, there are grassy picnic spots just beyond the upper cable-car station, or try the lamb roast and spectacular views from the wide terrace of the cable-car station restaurant. To get to the Dajti Express departure point, take the public bus from outside Tirana's clock tower to Porcelan (40 lekë). From here, it's a 1.5km walk uphill, or you can wait for a free bus transfer (departures every 30 minutes, five minutes). Taxis from Tirana should only cost 600 lekë. It's also possible to drive or cycle to the top.

Rinia Park (Youth Park) is a public park in the centre of Tirana. Built in 1950, it covers an area of 29 hectares. Initially it was a pleasant family park where Tirana residents took their children and relax in the evenings or at weekends. Later it took the name Taiwan after the complex to the side of the green area, which is like an island in the Park. There is another funny story behind this name. The construction of Taiwan complex finished just when the Albania's communist regime broke relations with China. At that time, Albania recognized the sovereignty of Taiwan and named the new structure in the middle of Tirana in their support. These are the rumors, one can not bet that this is the truth. The history of the park, continues in '90. After the collapse of the regime, illegal buildings sprang up all around the park, but during the city's clean-up in 2000, more than 130 buildings were demolished and the park was reseeded with grass. The white terraced building complex on the western edge is decorated with fountains houses cafés, restaurants and a bowling and billiards centre in the basement. Named after an old nickname for the park, the entire centre is known as the Taiwan. Both names are used. Youth park, or Taiwan is today a popular meeting place for people since the Taiwan complex has nice cafés and very good restaurants.

Arts & Culture

The largest museum in Albania holds many of the country's archaeological treasures and a replica of Skanderbeg's massive sword (how he held it, rode his horse and fought at the same time is a mystery). The excellent collection is almost entirely signed in English and takes you chronologically from ancient Illyria to the postcommunist era. The collection of statues, mosaics and columns from ancient Greek and Roman times is breathtaking. A disturbing and very important gallery devoted to those who suffered persecution under the communist regime is the most recent addition to the collection, though frustratingly, almost none of this display is in English. Another highlight is a terrific exhibition of icons by Onufri, a renowned 16th-century Albanian master of colour. The modernist mosaic adorning the museum's facade is entitled Albania and shows Albanians victorious and proud from Illyrian times through to WWII, with some unsurprisingly communist overtones.

This fantastic conversion – from a massive Cold War bunker on the outskirts of Tirana into a history and contemporary art museum – is Albania's most exciting new sight and easily a Tirana highlight. With almost 3000 sq metres of space underground spread over several floors, the bunker was built for Albania's political elite in the 1970s and remained a secret for much of its existence. Now it hosts exhibits that combine the modern history of Albania with pieces of contemporary art. Just arriving at the bunker is quite an exciting experience, as you go through a long, dark tunnel in the hillside that leads you to the entrance on the side of a still-active Albanian military base. Once you're inside the bunker itself, you can wander through the furnished rooms intended for the communist elite as they faced the invasion that so terrified them. Elsewhere you'll find a very detailed history of modern Albania, beginning with the 1939 Italian invasion and ending with the overthrow of communism. The display arguably brushes over the true horrors of Hoxha's Stalinist regime, while at least recognising them, are some fascinating documents and photographs, including a video of Enver Hoxha's 1985 state funeral. Other highlights include the enormous Assembly Hall, the main social centre of the bunker, as well as the private chambers of other senior officials. To get here from the centre of Tirana, take a bus bound for Linza from outside the Palace of Culture on Sheshi Skënderbej, and ask the driver to let you out at Bunk'Art. It's located very close to the Dajti Express, so it makes sense to combine the two within one outing.

The little cousin to the main Bunk'Art, this museum, which is within a communist-era bunker and underground tunnel system below the Ministry of Internal Affairs, focuses on the role of the police and security services in Albania through the turbulent 20th century. While this might not sound especially interesting, the whole thing has been very well put together and makes for a fascinating journey behind police lines. Be warned that some of the exhibits are dark and deeply disturbing and are not suitable for children (signs have been put up indicating which rooms are not suitable for children).

This grand old 1930s building started life as Albania's first maternity hospital, but within a few years the focus turned from creating new life to ending lives, as the hospital was converted to an interrogation and surveillance centre (read: torture house). It remained as such until the fall of the communist regime. Today the House of Leaves is a museum dedicated to surveillance and interrogation in Albania. There are numerous fascinating surveillance items and quite a few graphic displays about what happened to those considered enemies of the regime. Some exhibits are not suitable for children.

The Blloku, or Block area, has become Tiranë's hippest and most vibrant district. Filled with cafes, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, it is the place to see and be seen in this swiftly changing and growing cosmopolitan city. History of Area The Block is the location of former Communist dictator Enver Hoxha's villa. During the period of his rule, the area was only reserved for government officials and the general public could not enter. After Hoxha's death, the area was reopened and is now a popular hangout and destination point. One can find trendy bars and nightclubs, with fashionably dressed locals stepping out in their fashionable best, crammed cheek by jowl with tasty and satisfying restaurants. One can even see more fancy cars in this square area than in many other European capitals. The Block is also the center for Tiranë's famous cafe culture. In both summer and winter, Albanians of all ages gather in friendly and welcoming cafes to sit, catch up, chat, conduct business, or just read the paper. Espresso is the drink of choice, a legacy of Albania's close relationship with Italy. Sit back, order a macchiato, and enjoy the city moving by.

Located in a quieter part of town not far from Skanderberg Square, Hemingway has a friendly atmosphere, over 100 types of rum—that’s it’s specialty liquor—and old-fashioned décor reminiscent of the 1970s and ‘80s in Albania, but with a bohemian twist. Styled as a cafe-museum, this little bohemian place looks like a flea market. Every spare centimetre is crammed with communist-era relics, farming implements (those pitchforks hanging from the bar are probably a warning), Japanese fans, old clocks and so on. Styled as a cafe-museum, this little bohemian place looks like a flea market. Every spare centimetre is crammed with communist-era relics, farming implements (those pitchforks hanging from the bar are probably a warning), Japanese fans, old clocks and so on. It's certainly a memorable spot for a coffee or one of 25 varieties of raki, the local fruit-based spirit.
