Food Scene

We love the following restaurants on Congress Street. 1. The Green Elephant, a vegetarian Thai bistro $$. Plenty of veggie choice, with lots of delicious flavors for the non meat eater in you! 2. Vinland, a personal favorite. All food and alcohol (except wines) are produced in the state of Maine. Want a locally made pour of absinthe to wash down your local lobster baked on the half shell, then this is the place to go. Book in advance or make use of the walk in (outdoor) seating. 3. Nosh Kitchen and Bar $$, a sports bar that creates great fries and burgers for a quick hunger fix or to catch a game. 4. Boda $$, awesome, inventive Thai food. Great atmosphere, inventive cocktails. 5. Local 188 $$, tapas style restaurant/bar, kick back in the couches, pull up to the bar and grab a great cocktail or hang with the hipsters. Great place to get down with the local scene. 6. Otto's pizza $$, grab aslice and go, or sit down for a pie with some local craft beer. Great pizza with a twist. 7. Local Sprouts Cafe $$, a co-op that makes baked goods, delicious coffee and can serve you up great sandwiches and soups. 8. Blue $, Jazz restaurant with local scene, eat and take in the music. Warm cozy vibe. 9. Empire Chinese Kitchen $$, dimsum to get you started. Upstairs turns into a music venue at night with lots of local bands. 10. Ocho $, feeling hungry with a need to quickly satisfy, Ocho is an artisanal burrito shop. No seating at this time (they are moving to a new location soon). Huge burrito's made with things you wouldn't expect to find in a burrito, but it works spectacularly in filling that bottomless pit! BARS Congress Street is full of great bars. Our favorites are LFK, Local 188, and Bramhall Pub. Towards the Old Port there is Novare Res (voted 27th best beer bar in America), Lincolns, a 'speakeasy' , Rosie's, the Portland Hunt and Alpine Club, RiRa and Vena's Fizz House.

We can highly recommend the following cafe/bakeries. 1. Tandem Coffee/bakery at 742 Congress Street. 2. Standard Bakery on 75 Commercial Street. 3. Rosemont specialty grocery, 5 stores in Portland, great baked goods. 4. Little Sprouts Co-op, 649 Congress Street, great pastries, lunch food and coffee. 5. Union Street Bagels, 147 Cumberland Ave, just bagels people, but good ones! 6. Speckled Ax, 567 Congress Street. We buy this coffee to drink at home (do I need to say anymore?). 7. Bam Bam Bakery, 267 Commercial Street. Lots of tasty gluten free products.
