Food Scene

How to get there: Take a taxi to Jalan Latimojong 105. This is the ONLY cafe in Makassar serving genuine top-shelf, quality, locally-sourced coffee. Makassar does have the usual gaggle of chain coffee shops, such as Starbucks, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, and Excelso. They all serve generic, often overpriced and overroasted beans fit only for undiscerning audience, served by uncaring staff. Toarco Toraja Coffee stands heads and shoulders above the rest. Enjoy beans sourced directly from Toraja, 300km from Makassar. Toarco maintains its own plantation in Toraja, and it also sources coffee from local smallholders. Drinking Toarco coffee means supporting local Torajan community, as well as ensuring that your beans actually come from plants grown at 1800m - 2500m elevation above sea level. At Toarco Toraja Coffee, guests are served lightly roasted, blond-colored beans that maximise Torajan beans' innate multifaceted flavors. The cafe does serve frappes and frappucinos and complex milk froth-topped drinks, but guests are advised to skip these and go straight to the simple black coffee. Choose your preferred beans' village of origin, and the barista will grind your beans of choice and brew them using one of the two methods: hand drip using a Hario V60 cone or syphon. My personal recommendation: single-origin beans from Pedamaran or Sapan-Minanga village, prepared using the syphon method right in front of you. The resulting brew is almost sweet and fruity, with just the right amount of acidity, and minimal bitterness. Do have the first sip plain, unsweetened. After the first sip, do add just a touch of palm sugar. Forgo cream or milk. At the end of the visit, guests can buy beans to be enjoyed at home. The beans can be ground to one's liking, or buy them whole (this is the recommended method; invest in a home grinder and enjoy a freshly ground brew everytime!)

How to get there: Exit Kompleks Gladiol, and walk east for 500m along Jalan Pengayoman. Mie Ceng will be on your right. This place is crowded, unromantic, and noisy. What it delivers in yumminess makes up for its undesirable qualities. Its mainstay favorite is the Mie Ceng (Ceng Noodle). Mie Ceng is subgum Hongkong-style, deep-fried crispy noodle topped with rich, thick, seafood-chicken-vegetable broth. Many locals will tell you that Mie Ceng is an impostor, follow-up act to Mie Titi. This is true, but over the years Mie Ceng has become my preferred go-to comfort food. Plus, Mie Ceng actually cares about wiping their tables and mopping their floors. Mie Ceng is a dry establishment, which is unfortunate considering how well the salty noodle and sauce go with a frozen pint of lager or pilsener. Solution: take your noodles to go and pick up a bottle or two of Bir Bintang to enjoy in the comfort of your rental unit.

How to get there: take a taxi to Jalan Pengayoman 18. Or exit Kompleks Gladiol and walk or bike 1.6km to the west along Jalan Pengayoman. Kios La Galigo will be on your left. One can always enjoy cheap, authentic local food from street hawkers or grimy hole-in-the-wall establishments with the occasional cockroach infestation, or visit a pricey fine-dining spot. Kios La Galigo strikes a nice balance between the two. Unairconditioned but clean, Kios La Galigo serves crowd pleasers such as red fried rice, shaved coconuts over ice, and chicken noodles. Perfect for brunch, lunch, and dinner.

How to get there: simply exit Kompleks Gladiol (on foot), and KFC Pengayoman will be perfectly visible. Only 3 minute-walk from your rental unit. Follow this google map direction: https://goo.gl/maps/yTWeq1tsmV32 . KFC is certainly a ubiquitous, and an often unpopular choice among our discerning, foodie-oriented guests. But you are tired, and have no time to cook. Then there is something to be said of going out your door and be munching on delicious plate of fried chicken in less than 10 minutes later. The place is clean, the service is quick, and the food is good. It is open 24 hours a day, and wait.... it also delivers!
