Parks & Nature

Shinjuku Gyoen (新宿御苑) is one of Tokyo's largest and most popular parks. Located just a short walk from Shinjuku Station, the paid park's spacious lawns, meandering walking paths and tranquil scenery provide a relaxing escape from the busy urban center around it. In spring Shinjuku Gyoen becomes one of the best places in the city to see cherry blossoms.hinjuku Gyoen is also nice to visit during autumn when the leaves change. There are a lot of different types of trees that change colors around the park, however the maple trees are particularly beautiful and can be seen in large numbers around the Japanese garden and Momijiyama (maple mountain) on the park's eastern side. The colors typically appear from mid November to mid December.

Arts & Culture

Kabuki is a classical Japanese dance-drama. Kabuki theatre is known for the stylization of its drama and for the elaborate make-up worn by some of its performers. But what happens with the money, you say? Kabukiza offers a solution that could have been lifted out of the Tokyo Cheapo manual (yes, there is one). It’s called the “Hitomakumi” (“single-act”) tickets and it’s devilishly hidden in the Japanese-language website of the theater, in the “News” section, although some general information is also available in the English-language website‘s “News” section along the left-hand side. The long and the short of it is that if you are willing to wait in line for 30-120 minutes and to sit (or stand) as back as possible, you might be able to get one of the 90 seats and 60 standing places for anything from 800 yen to 2,000 yen. (The price is determined by the length of the act and the popularity of the play.)

Sightseeing

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings have become the face of the West Side of Shinjuku Station. You can see all of Tokyo from the popular 202-meter high observation decks, located on the 45th floor of Main Building No. 1. We recommend the South Observation Deck during the day, as you can see toward the popular Odaiba entertainment district. There is also a café where you can get light snacks. The North Observation Deck, which is open until 10:30 p.m., is great for enjoying Tokyo at night, complete with drinks at the deck's café and bar, where a variety of alcoholic drinks are available.

If you are tired, this Onsen is it. Don't let the fact that it's located next to the dreary Toshimaen amusement park put you off: this is the nicest of Tokyo's mega-onsen bathing complexes. Housed in a Japanese garden designed by leading landscape architect Kenzo Kosugi, Niwa no Yu is divided into male and female onsen bathing areas, with a central pool, outdoor jacuzzis and Finnish-style sauna where couples can hang out together (bathing suits required, natch). The sodium chloride-rich hot spring waters are said to be good for relieving muscle pain and stiff joints, while the absence of screaming children (you have to be at least junior high school age to get in) guarantees maximum relaxation.
