“Chania is the main shopping centre for all of western Crete. Stroll in the narrow lanes of its Old Town to discover numerous interesting small shops. The town has a great covered market (Agora) and fascinating specialist shopping streets to explore. Good buys from around €7 include crochet bags and beadwork, local rugs and kilims and authentic Greek bath sponges. Do not miss narrow Skridlof Street, a traditional leatherworkers’ lane where bargains include high quality handmade goods such as handbags, purses, shoes and sandals. There is also a metalworkers’ lane, Sifaka Street”

“The Municipal Market of Chania is commonly known as the "Agora". It was built between 1909 and 1913 and modelled on the covered market of Marseilles. It has a cruciform shape and space inside for a large number of shops. It was built on the site of a bastion of the Venetian fortification wall. This was dismantled to fill in the moat and created a space to build the market on. It is still an active market and houses shops selling vegetables, fish, meat, herbs and spices, Cretan products such as cheeses, olives, raki and more. In the summer months many shops also sell tourist souvenirs. There are also a few good workmen's cafés offering local food. The market is open during normal shop hours which generally are Monday, Wednesday, Saturday from 8.00 until 14.00 and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8.00 until 21.00. It is closed Sundays (with some exceptions before Christmas and Easter). ”

“The Municipal Market of Chania, the large building of 4000 square meters in a surrounding area of 17.200 square meters, is the "heart" of the city. It is an original building that, apart from a business activity center, also provides a concrete image of the ancient Greek marketplace In 1980, the Municipal Market of Chania was declared a protected monument by the Ministry of Culture.”

“One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, still full of Venetian charm. The port at night is one of the most romantic places imaginable with many excellent tavernas and bars coming into their own in the later parts of the night. ”
