“Newcastle Art Gallery presents a dynamic range of exhibitions and events for the local community and visitors alike, and is nationally recognised for one of the finest public collections in Australia. lack Totem II, one of only two large sculptures ever produced by the late Australian artist, Brett Whiteley stands 11 metres high in the Gallery forecourt, and John Olsen's ceiling painting The sea sun of five bells 1964 is on permanent display inside. It's collection continues to grow, through the support of the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation, the Newcastle Art Gallery Society, and the benefaction of countless individuals, artists, and companies. Founded on a 1945 bequest from Dr Roland Pope consisting of almost 200 major Australian paintings, it now numbers more than 6,700 works. Key artists include: Arthur Boyd, David Boyd, Rupert Bunny, Judy Cassab, Grace Cossington-Smith, John Coburn, William Dobell, Donald Friend, Emily Kame Kgnwarreye, Margaret Olley, Margaret Preston, Lloyd Rees, Brett Whiteley, as well as extensive Indigenous art and Japanese ceramics sub-collections. The nation’s first purpose-built regional gallery; Newcastle Art Gallery was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in March 1977.”

“Aside from its smart design and spectacular location what’s most to love about Merewether Surfhouse is the way in which it caters to both young and old. Upstairs on the left you have the child free, older sophisticated set who are partial to a bevy or two. On the right there’s the a-la-carte restaurant, with flavours that reflect a modern Australian menu. Go down a level and you’ll find the function spaces, perfect for that seaside wedding or smart business do. Hit the ground floor and this is where it really gets busy. From dawn to dusk you can find mums, dads, kids and grandparents, scooters and bikes, runners and dawdlers, and the odd four footed friend cruising up and down one of the busiest pathways in Newcastle. For those looking for a lazy breakfast or afternoon get-together the Surfhouse café offers not only some tasty bites but a super relaxed vibe. Looking for something even more relaxed then head to the Pizza Shop and get amongst a slice of pizza, a beer or soda and a scoop of gelato. The café is a fab place to take the kids, not only is the menu perfect for the little ones but the chilled approach that staff take to kids on bikes, scooters and trikes is supa cool.”

“Newcastle's Memorial Walk is a spectacular coastal walk with a personal connection for thousands of locals. The 450 metre walk along the cliff top links Newcastle’s Strzelecki Lookout to Bar Beach. Built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli in 1915 and the commencement of steel making in Newcastle; it acts as a magnificent memorial to the men and women of the Hunter who served their community and their country. The Walk is located above Memorial Drive The Hill, on Strzelecki Headland (between Bar Beach and King Edward Park).”

“This is a small and intimate zoo, very cost effective in comparison to most either zoos. There are bbq facilities on site for an outdoor lunch with the family surrounded by the animals :) The zoo talks are also scheduled throughout the day for reasonable prices.”

“This is the site of an old fort originally built in the early 1800s and is the only fort in Australia to have fired its guns at the Japanese during WWII. It's a nice historical spot that kids will love but there is also a great view of the harbour and city from the lawns.”
